Pro-Khalistani mob attacks believers at a Hindu temple in Canada; Trudeau criticizes

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau voiced strong condemnation after a violent attack targeting Hindu devotees occurred at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton. Trudeau labeled the incident as "unacceptable," underscoring that every Canadian deserves the right to practice their faith freely and without fear. The attack, reportedly led by a group of alleged Khalistani supporters carrying sticks and flags associated with pro-Khalistani groups, has sparked significant outrage and renewed debates over public safety and religious freedom in Canada. Trudeau extended his gratitude to local police for their swift intervention to protect the community and begin an investigation into the incident, which has left many questioning the balance between freedom of expression and security.

Widely circulated videos of the attack, shared by Canadian MPs and others on social media, show a group of men wielding sticks and reportedly assaulting devotees outside the temple. The Hindu Canadian Foundation, a non-profit organization advocating for the Hindu community, reported that women and children were among those assaulted, heightening the alarm over the incident. According to sources, the violence broke out following a rally held by Khalistani supporters commemorating the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, which eventually led to the confrontation with Hindu devotees at the temple. The incident caused immediate tension in the area, leading to an increased police presence, and raised serious questions about the safety of worshippers.

Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah publicly addressed the community, stressing the importance of maintaining peace and urging restraint. While he acknowledged the right to protest, he underscored that violent and criminal behavior would not be tolerated, assuring the community that individuals involved in criminal activities would be arrested and prosecuted. His statements have provided some reassurance but also underscore the gravity with which law enforcement is handling the situation.

Political leaders across the spectrum echoed condemnation of the attack. Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre stated that all Canadians must have the freedom to practice their faith in peace, condemning the violence as "completely unacceptable." He pledged to bring unity and restore order, emphasizing the responsibility of the government to prevent similar incidents. Canada’s Indian-origin Transport Minister Anita Anand also denounced the attacks, calling them a direct affront to religious freedoms. She expressed solidarity with the Hindu community and reiterated the right of all Canadians, including Hindus, to worship peacefully without fear of harassment or assault.

MP Jagmeet Singh, a prominent Sikh leader and Trudeau’s ally, also weighed in, labeling the violence as "wrong" and calling for peace. He emphasized that every Canadian should be able to visit places of worship without encountering hostility or fear, underscoring the importance of religious harmony. In a strong reaction, MP Chandra Arya condemned the attack, describing it as a "crossing of a red line" by Khalistani extremists in Canada. He highlighted that this violent act exemplifies a worrying escalation in Khalistani extremism within Canadian borders, which he urged authorities to address urgently. Arya’s response resonated with many who have expressed concern over the increasing influence of pro-Khalistan groups in Canada and their potential threat to public safety.

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown also addressed the issue, expressing deep disappointment over the violence near the Hindu temple and underscoring that religious freedom is a foundational Canadian value. Brown assured the public that law enforcement would take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of places of worship and hold the perpetrators accountable. His comments reflected growing frustration within Canadian communities about the perceived leniency toward extremist groups, as well as the need to safeguard Canada’s core values of tolerance and religious freedom.

Adding to the tension, Arya suggested that Canada’s freedom of expression laws are inadvertently enabling Khalistani extremists to operate with a level of impunity, leading to incidents such as the one in Brampton. He called upon Hindu Canadians to become more assertive in protecting their rights and urged political leaders to take concrete actions to ensure the community’s safety. This incident occurs amid already strained relations between India and Canada, with New Delhi repeatedly calling for Ottawa to take stricter measures against Khalistani extremists who have been active within Canadian communities. Canada, however, has pushed back, accusing India of targeting Khalistani individuals within its own borders, a stance that has resulted in diplomatic tension and a series of tit-for-tat measures affecting bilateral relations.

The incident has intensified concerns over the spread of extremism in Canada, as well as the challenges of balancing freedom of speech with public security and the rights of all communities to worship without fear. As calls for action grow, the Canadian government faces pressure both domestically and internationally to address the issue of extremist violence more decisively.
