Producer Shailendra Singh, who previously "gifted" the title *Singh Is Kinng* to Akshay Kumar and fellow producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah, is now focused on bringing his long-anticipated project *Singh Is Kinng 2* to life. After more than a decade of back-and-forth discussions and negotiations, Singh has successfully regained the rights to the iconic title. Now that he has it in his hands once again, he’s eager to move forward with the production of this romantic-comedy sequel. However, much to the disappointment of fans, Akshay Kumar, who became synonymous with the role of Happy Singh in the original film, will not be reprising his role for the second part.
According to a *Mid-Day* report, Shailendra Singh revealed that it took him 12 years to reclaim the *Singh Is Kinng* title, after several attempts to bring it back from Akshay Kumar and Vipul Amrutlal Shah. Now that he has finally secured the rights, Singh is ready to get the ball rolling on the sequel without any further delays. He confirmed, “After 12 years of going back and forth with Vipul and Akshay, I finally got the title three years ago. I have started the process of making *Singh Is Kinng 2*. I will begin production from October 2025 so that I can release it in 2026.” With this timeline in mind, the sequel is expected to be released around 2026, marking the return of the franchise after more than a decade.
Originally, Singh had conceived an idea for the sequel that would involve Happy Singh embarking on a new mission to recover the Koh-i-Noor diamond, a prized jewel historically linked to India. However, this concept didn’t come to fruition, and Singh decided to pivot to a different approach for the film. He revealed that the new *Singh Is Kinng* movie would feature a completely new protagonist, stating, “The hero won’t be called Happy Singh. We’ll create a new character.” Fans who had hoped for a continuation of Akshay Kumar’s character will be surprised by this fresh direction for the film.
Interestingly, Singh also shared that he has already settled on his first choice for the lead role: Ranveer Singh. He spoke highly of Ranveer’s energy, charisma, and playful demeanor, all qualities that Singh believes would make him the perfect fit for the new character. “My first choice is Ranveer Singh. We reached out to his manager on Saturday. His energy, cheekiness, and fun fit the character. Also, Ranveer has never played a Sardar before,” Singh explained. While Ranveer was originally offered the role back in 2017, things didn’t work out at that time. But Singh feels the timing is right now, and talks with the actor’s team are reportedly underway. If Ranveer doesn’t take up the role, Singh has a backup choice: Diljit Dosanjh. Singh believes that both Ranveer and Diljit would bring something special to the film and create magic together. “If Ranveer doesn’t work out, then Diljit is my next choice,” he said, adding that he has full confidence that either of the two could bring a fresh energy to the project.
As for the film’s direction, Singh has expressed a desire to work with either Priyadarshan or Anees Bazmee. Both of these directors are well-known for their work in the comedy genre, and Bazmee has a special connection to the original *Singh Is Kinng* as the film’s director. The involvement of a director like Bazmee could help the sequel retain the same comedic sensibilities that made the first film so successful.
The original *Singh Is Kinng*, which was released in 2008, remains one of Akshay Kumar’s most iconic and successful films. The film featured an ensemble cast including Katrina Kaif, Sonu Sood, Jaaved Jaaferi, the late Om Puri, and Ranvir Shorey, among others. Directed by Anees Bazmee, it was a massive hit at the box office, earning widespread acclaim for its humor, performances, and larger-than-life storytelling. As a result, *Singh Is Kinng* became a beloved franchise in the Indian film industry, and fans have long been waiting for a sequel.
However, with Shailendra Singh’s new approach to the project, the sequel will offer something completely new and different. Instead of following the same character, Happy Singh, the film will introduce a fresh protagonist with a new story, marking a shift in the direction of the franchise. While Akshay Kumar’s absence may be a disappointment for some fans, the promise of a new, exciting character with a unique twist could spark a renewed interest in the series. The involvement of Ranveer Singh, who is known for his energetic performances and diverse roles, could bring a new flavor to the film. Additionally, the decision to bring in either Priyadarshan or Anees Bazmee as the director ensures that the film will maintain its comedic roots, while also offering a fresh take on the concept.
As the film continues to develop, fans can look forward to more updates on the cast and crew, as well as the specific direction that the sequel will take. It’s clear that Shailendra Singh is dedicated to making *Singh Is Kinng 2* a major success, and with the combination of talented actors, experienced directors, and a fresh approach to the story, the sequel has the potential to become just as popular as its predecessor.
