The Telangana government has introduced a 100% exemption on road tax and registration fees for electric vehicles (EVs) in the state, as part of its broader initiative to foster sustainable transportation and reduce air pollution in urban areas like Hyderabad. The exemption, which will be in effect until December 31, 2026, aims to make eco-friendly transportation more accessible and encourage widespread adoption of EVs across various vehicle categories.
Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar emphasized that this move is designed to make electric vehicles more affordable for consumers and businesses, contributing to the state’s sustainability goals. The exemption applies to a wide range of EVs, including two-wheelers, four-wheelers, three-wheelers, electric buses, and light goods carriers. This includes both private and commercial vehicles, such as taxis and autorickshaws.
Special provisions have been made for electric buses, particularly those operated by the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC), which will receive an indefinite exemption from road tax and registration fees. Private companies that own electric buses for employee transport purposes (not for commercial use) will also benefit from this exemption until December 2026, regardless of the number of buses they register.
The initiative is part of the Telangana government’s broader electric vehicle policy, which aims to create a cleaner, eco-friendly transport system while addressing pollution issues in major urban centers. By reducing the upfront costs associated with EV ownership, the government hopes to make electric vehicles a more attractive option for both personal and commercial use, driving the transition toward cleaner energy solutions.
