An analysis conducted by AdImpact, a US-based advertising intelligence firm that specializes in political ad tracking, reveals how both campaigns have adjusted their messaging from July through October to better align with the evolving voter priorities in these pivotal states. The ad tracking data illustrates a noticeable shift in the themes emphasized by each campaign, with Harris’s team transitioning away from defensive messaging related to her law enforcement background. Instead, they have adopted a more proactive stance, focusing on issues such as healthcare reform, equitable taxation, and housing accessibility. This evolution reflects a calculated decision to prioritize immediate economic concerns that resonate with voters, effectively tapping into their hopes and anxieties.

Since July 22, taxation has emerged as a dominant theme in Harris's campaign ads, comprising 32% of her total airtime. In comparison, the Democrats as a whole have allocated a staggering 57% of their ad content to this pressing issue, underscoring its significance in the minds of voters. Abortion remains a significant concern for Democrats, ranking as the second most important electoral issue overall, but for the Harris campaign specifically, it appears lower in priority than taxation. This strategic pivot indicates a deliberate choice to focus on immediate economic issues while still acknowledging the importance of reproductive rights, particularly in light of recent Supreme Court decisions that have galvanized voter interest in this area.

In contrast, Trump’s campaign has fixated on inflation, which accounts for an impressive 62% of his ad content. This focus reflects the acute economic anxieties that have arisen among voters, particularly in the wake of rising costs of living and supply chain disruptions. However, in addition to inflation, immigration and crime are standout issues for Trump, capturing a remarkable 71% and 67% of his messaging, respectively. This emphasis highlights Trump's strategy to mobilize his base around a narrative of law and order, with a strong focus on border security and public safety. These themes resonate deeply with his supporters, who view them as essential to preserving their way of life and maintaining social order.

Interestingly, since entering the race, Harris's campaign has significantly outperformed Trump's in terms of broadcast airings, with over 138,000 more airings overall. In total, her campaign has achieved 234,000 broadcast airings across the seven swing states, effectively surpassing Trump's presence in all states except Georgia and North Carolina. This increased visibility reflects an aggressive campaign strategy designed to saturate the airwaves with messages that resonate with key demographics, particularly women and young voters who may feel marginalized by the current political landscape.

Throughout her campaign, Harris has consistently addressed taxation, healthcare, and housing as primary concerns across all battleground states. In specific states like Nevada, North Carolina, and Arizona, abortion also figures prominently in her messaging, showcasing her commitment to a comprehensive approach that addresses both economic and social issues. This strategy is particularly crucial in states where reproductive rights have emerged as a central issue in the wake of various legislative changes and judicial rulings, indicating her understanding of the local political climate.

On the other hand, Trump’s messaging strategy has remained relatively uniform across battleground states, focusing on inflation, the economy, and housing. This consistency aims to reinforce his brand as a reliable choice for economic recovery and stability, aligning with his supporters' desire for a return to what they perceive as economic normalcy. Trump’s approach seeks to evoke nostalgia for his previous administration while positioning himself as a strong leader capable of tackling the pressing issues facing the nation today.
