Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the Congress General Secretary, made a significant appearance at an election rally in Wayanad, Kerala, on Sunday, where she passionately articulated her party's commitment to addressing the pressing needs of the local populace. Accompanied by her brother, Rahul Gandhi, who is the Member of Parliament for Rae Bareli, Priyanka focused on the core issues that residents face, emphasizing her dedication to improving infrastructure, enhancing job opportunities, and tackling the persistent human-animal conflicts that have plagued the region.
In her address to the gathering in Mananthavady, Priyanka expressed her gratitude to the people of Wayanad for their unwavering support during challenging times for her brother. She stated, "Only the people of Wayanad understood that my brother was fighting for the truth and the right when a major campaign was unleashed against him." This acknowledgment of their solidarity served to strengthen the bond between the Congress party and the local community.
Priyanka highlighted the ongoing challenges at the Wayanad Medical College, a key healthcare facility in the region, noting that while Rahul had made substantial efforts to improve its services, there is still a significant amount of work to be done. "We need to ensure that the healthcare facilities here are at the highest standards possible," she asserted, pledging that her party would prioritize healthcare improvements as part of their agenda.
Addressing the audience, she made bold promises regarding the construction of new roads to enhance connectivity within Wayanad and outlined plans to mitigate human-animal conflicts, which have become increasingly frequent due to the encroachment of wildlife into human habitats. She assured the attendees that these issues would be tackled head-on if her party were to win the election.
Rahul Gandhi also took the stage to bolster his sister’s message, emphasizing that Priyanka would be the "best possible MP" for Wayanad, given her commitment to serving the community and her readiness to tackle their issues. His endorsement comes in light of his decision to vacate the Wayanad seat after successfully winning both Wayanad and Rae Bareli in the recent 2024 Lok Sabha elections, thereby allowing Priyanka the opportunity to step in and represent the constituency.
The Congress party's campaign also included pointed criticisms of the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Priyanka was particularly vocal, stating, "PM Modi's government works only for his extremely rich businessmen. His objective is not to provide better health services, a better standard of living, or better job opportunities. His only aim is to continue to stay in power." She condemned the Modi administration for allegedly prioritizing the interests of a few over the many, claiming that the government's actions have resulted in a deterioration of public services and a widening gap between the rich and the poor.
In the upcoming by-polls, scheduled for November 13, Priyanka will face formidable opponents, including BJP's Navya Haridas and veteran CPI leader Sathyan Mokeri, who represents the Left Democratic Front (LDF). The Congress party is keen on retaining the Wayanad seat, which would not only strengthen its foothold in Kerala but also send a resounding message regarding its continued relevance in Indian politics. The results of this critical election will be tallied on November 23, making it a focal point for political observers in a state where Congress seeks to reclaim influence amid challenges from both the BJP and the LDF.
