What several AI detection tools reveal about Supriya Sule and Nana Patole's viral audio

As the Maharashtra Assembly elections approached, the political landscape was shaken by a bombshell from Ravindranath Patil, a former IPS officer from Pune. Patil, in a series of statements, accused prominent leaders Supriya Sule, from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and Nana Patole, the Maharashtra Congress chief, of misappropriating Bitcoins from a high-profile cryptocurrency fraud case dating back to 2019. Patil claimed that the political figures had used these illicitly obtained Bitcoins to finance their election campaigns.

The accusations did not stop with Sule and Patole. Patil also named two key figures from the Pune Police Department—Amitabh Gupta, the then-Commissioner of Police, and Bhagyashri Nautake, the former Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the cybercrime investigations. Patil alleged that Gupta and Nautake were involved in the illegal diversion of the Bitcoins. According to Patil, the coins were stolen during the investigation and eventually ended up funding political activities for Sule and Patole, potentially influencing the outcome of the upcoming elections.

The allegations set off a political firestorm, and it wasn’t long before the controversy took another dramatic turn. A series of audios purportedly featuring Supriya Sule and Nana Patole began circulating online. These audios allegedly captured conversations between the political leaders discussing the Bitcoin misappropriation. While these audio samples appeared to corroborate Patil’s claims, both Sule and Patole quickly denied the authenticity of the recordings, arguing that the voices were fabricated and did not belong to them.

In an unexpected twist, Ajit Pawar, a prominent leader from a rival faction of the NCP, joined the fray. Pawar suggested that one of the voices in the audio sounded like his sister, Supriya Sule’s, while the other voice resembled someone he had worked with. However, both Sule and Patole stuck to their denials, further fueling the controversy. They claimed that the audios were part of a politically motivated smear campaign and rejected any allegations of their involvement in the cryptocurrency fraud. Meanwhile, Gaurav Mehta, an individual central to the controversy, was reportedly raided by the Enforcement Directorate, a government agency investigating financial crimes related to the alleged Bitcoin misappropriation.

To settle the authenticity of the audio clips, experts turned to advanced deepfake detection technology. These tools are designed to identify whether audio or video content has been manipulated or artificially generated using AI technologies. Among the tools employed were TrueMedia, Deefake-O-Meter from the University of Buffalo, and Hiya's Deepfake Voice Detector. These systems analyzed the audio samples and provided results that varied significantly, underlining the complexity and challenges of detecting deepfake content.

The Deefake-O-Meter, which uses six different detection algorithms, flagged four out of the six detectors as being over 80% confident that the audio clips involving Supriya Sule, Amitabh Gupta, and Gaurav Mehta were AI-generated. However, for the alleged Nana Patole audio, the confidence level was lower. Three of the detectors identified it as likely AI-generated, though with less certainty than for the other samples.

Hiya's Deepfake Voice Detector similarly concluded that the audio samples allegedly involving Supriya Sule, Amitabh Gupta, and Gaurav Mehta were likely created using AI. The tool flagged the samples as manipulated. However, the tool’s confidence in the authenticity of Nana Patole’s audio was much lower, likely due to the short duration of the clip, which was just six seconds long. Experts believe that such a brief audio sample may not provide enough data for the tool to make a definitive conclusion, leading to the low confidence score.

India Today’s Misinformation Combat Alliance’s (MCA) Deepfake Analysis Unit (DAU), consisting of a panel of AI and tech experts, reviewed the audio samples in question. The DAU confirmed that three of the viral audio clips were indeed AI-generated. However, regarding the audio allegedly featuring Nana Patole, the unit noted that the confidence level was lower, likely due to the short length of the clip and the Marathi language being used, which may not have been sufficiently represented in the training datasets of the detection tools.

The controversy surrounding the audio samples not only fueled political tensions but also raised significant concerns about the role of deepfake technology in modern-day political campaigns. Deepfake technology has rapidly evolved and become a powerful tool for creating highly convincing false content. This has posed a unique challenge to both the public and the media in verifying the authenticity of digital content. The rise of such technology has led to calls for more stringent measures to counter the spread of misinformation, particularly in the context of elections.

Nana Patole, in response to the allegations, vehemently denied any involvement in the alleged cryptocurrency fraud. He dismissed the BJP’s claims, arguing that even Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recognized his voice. Patole went on to downplay the seriousness of the allegations, explaining that as a farmer, he had no understanding of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, and thus had no reason to be involved in any such illegal activities. His defense was an attempt to distance himself from the scandal, framing the allegations as an effort by political opponents to undermine his credibility and reputation ahead of the state elections.

The entire controversy underscores the growing influence of AI technology in shaping political discourse. As deepfake technology becomes more accessible and sophisticated, it raises the stakes in political campaigns, where misinformation can have a significant impact on public opinion. This incident also highlights the challenges of distinguishing between genuine and manipulated content, emphasizing the need for robust detection tools and public awareness. As the investigation into the allegations continues, it remains uncertain how this scandal will impact the electoral prospects of Supriya Sule, Nana Patole, and their respective parties.

Amid these developments, the role of law enforcement agencies will be critical in investigating the claims and determining the veracity of the accusations. The Enforcement Directorate’s raid on Gaurav Mehta’s home, along with the continued scrutiny of the audio samples, will likely play a pivotal role in shaping the outcome of this scandal. Additionally, the public’s ability to discern fact from fiction in the digital age will become increasingly important as political campaigns become more intertwined with technology and online content. The coming weeks will reveal whether the accusations hold any substance or whether the entire episode will be dismissed as a politically motivated attack.
