The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has expressed grave concern over the alarming rise in violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, particularly in 2024, following the political upheaval that saw the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government collapse. According to data presented in the Rajya Sabha, 2,200 cases of violence against Hindus were reported in Bangladesh this year, a significant increase compared to 47 cases in 2022 and 302 in 2023. In Pakistan, incidents of violence against Hindus also persisted, with 112 cases reported till October 2024.
The MEA confirmed that it had raised these issues through diplomatic channels, urging both Bangladesh and Pakistan to take decisive action to ensure the safety and well-being of Hindu and other minority communities. The Indian government reiterated its expectations during the Foreign Secretary’s visit to Bangladesh on December 9, 2024, emphasizing the importance of protecting minority communities amidst the ongoing instability.
The political situation in Bangladesh has further strained relations with India. Following massive anti-government protests in August, Sheikh Hasina was ousted and later sought refuge in India. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus assumed power, adding another layer of uncertainty to the bilateral relationship. The Indian government has consistently conveyed its concerns to the Bangladeshi authorities, pressing for stringent measures to protect minorities.
In Pakistan, the Indian government has consistently highlighted the plight of minorities at international forums and urged Islamabad to address systemic persecution, sectarian violence, and religious intolerance.
Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh provided this data, sourced from minority and human rights organizations, and confirmed that no cases of violence against Hindus were reported in neighboring countries other than Bangladesh and Pakistan. The Indian government continues to monitor the situation closely and has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the interests of Hindu and other minority communities in the region.
