Barcelona's efforts to register Dani Olmo for the remainder of the season have suffered a significant setback, as the club's latest appeal was denied just one day before the deadline. The Spanish forward, who was signed in August for €55 million ($57.22 million), had initially been registered for the first half of the season. However, due to Barcelona's struggles to meet La Liga's wage cap, they were unable to secure a long-term registration for Olmo, leaving him in a precarious situation.
To facilitate Olmo’s initial registration, Barcelona had reallocated wages from players who were long-term injured, which allowed them to fit the 26-year-old and forward Pau VÃctor into their financial plans. However, the temporary arrangement, which lasted for four months, is set to expire at the end of December.
On Friday, Barcelona's request to provisionally register Olmo was denied by the Commercial Court Number 10, and this decision was upheld by the Court of First Instance Number 47 on Monday. La Liga rejected the precautionary registration, stating that the necessary conditions for such a measure were not met. The league emphasized that its Delegate Commission holds full authority in approving budgeting rules, and no club, including Barcelona, has previously contested these regulations.
This decision followed an earlier ruling by La Liga's Budget Validation Body, which was confirmed by the Financial Fair Play Committee, the Social Appeals Committee, and UEFA’s Second Instance Licensing Committee under the Spanish Football Federation.
Olmo, who began his youth career at Barcelona before moving to Dinamo Zagreb at 16, has been in excellent form this season, scoring six goals in 15 appearances for the club. He also played a crucial role in helping Spain win the European Championship in the summer.
With the deadline fast approaching, Barcelona is racing against time to find a solution to register Olmo before January 1, or he could become a free agent. Premier League clubs are reportedly showing interest in the talented forward, adding further pressure on Barcelona to resolve the situation.
In response to its financial difficulties, Spanish media have reported that Barcelona plans to sell VIP boxes at its iconic Camp Nou stadium, which could generate over €100 million. However, this plan would still require La Liga’s approval to be executed.
As of now, Barcelona sits third in La Liga, just three points behind leaders Atlético Madrid, and will be hoping for a swift resolution to Olmo's registration to avoid any further complications.
