ICC Test Batting Rankings: Travis Head rejoins the top 10 and is crowned the new No. 1 batter

Harry Brook’s rise to the top of the ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings, announced on December 11, is a remarkable achievement in the young batter's career. At just 25 years old, Brook has dethroned his England teammate Joe Root, who had held the No. 1 position for an extended period, and has now become the new leader in Test cricket batting. This achievement comes after a series of impressive performances, particularly in 2024, where Brook has scored an outstanding 1099 runs in 11 Tests, including four centuries, displaying a level of consistency that few can match.

Brook’s overall Test career statistics are equally impressive. He has accumulated 2280 runs from just 23 Tests, with an exceptional average of 61.62, and has already scored eight centuries. His remarkable consistency has earned him 898 rating points, which ties him with the legendary Sachin Tendulkar for the 34th-highest rating of all time for Test batters. This milestone is significant, not just for Brook, but also as a testament to his exceptional form and the potential that lies ahead. With this achievement, he becomes part of an exclusive group of players who have reached the top spot, showing his immense skill and potential to dominate in the longest format of the game for years to come.

In the ongoing Test series against New Zealand, Brook’s form has been nothing short of spectacular. He began the series with a commanding 171-run knock in Christchurch, followed by a solid 123 in Wellington and a fighting 55 in the same match. These performances have solidified his place as the top batter in the rankings, with his ability to play under pressure and adapt to different conditions standing out. In comparison, Joe Root has had a more modest contribution so far in the series, with just one century from four innings. Root's lower scores have seen him fall behind Brook, who now holds a slim one-point lead over him in the rankings. As a result, the race for the coveted No. 1 spot is far from over, with the final Test of the series in Hamilton on December 14 set to be a crucial showdown in the battle for the top spot.

While Brook has been making headlines for his rise to the top, other players have also seen improvements in their rankings. Australia’s Travis Head has climbed six places to reach No. 5 after his dominant 140-run performance in the Adelaide Test against India, where he took apart the Indian bowling attack with remarkable aggression. His 140 runs came off just 141 balls, and the knock was instrumental in Australia’s 10-wicket victory, which saw them take control of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. Meanwhile, South Africa's Temba Bavuma has seen his ranking improve by three places, bringing him to No. 7, after a series of solid performances for his country.

Marnus Labuschagne, a former No. 1-ranked batter, also made gains, moving up three places to No. 13. The Australian star, known for his consistency in the longest format, continues to remain a key figure for his team in the international Test arena.

However, Indian batters have faced some setbacks in the latest rankings following their recent performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India’s loss to Australia in the pink-ball Test in Adelaide, where they were comprehensively beaten by 10 wickets, resulted in a dip in the rankings for some of India’s top batters. Rohit Sharma, who has struggled in the series, has dropped out of the top 30, slipping five places. Virat Kohli has also seen a decline, falling six spots to No. 20 after failing to make a significant impact in the pink-ball Test. Rishabh Pant, another key player for India, has seen a similar drop, falling three spots to No. 9. Despite these setbacks, there is still optimism for Indian cricket, especially as young left-hander Yashasvi Jaiswal continues to impress. Jaiswal has retained his spot at No. 4, making him the highest-ranked Indian batter in the latest rankings.

As the series progresses and the final Test approaches, the rankings are likely to continue shifting, with Brook and Root at the forefront of the battle for the year-end No. 1 spot. Both players will be looking to put in match-winning performances in the upcoming Test in Hamilton, with everything to play for. The outcome of the third Test is not only crucial for the series result but also for deciding who will finish the year as the No. 1 Test batter in the world. Regardless of who emerges at the top, the performances of Brook and Root in recent months have added another exciting chapter to the story of men’s Test cricket.
