In 2025, Meta intends to add a display to Ray-Ban smart eyewear

Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses have steadily built a reputation as one of the most innovative pieces of wearable technology in the market, offering a seamless blend of fashion and functionality. Initially, Meta's smart glasses faced minimal competition in the market due to their advanced features and unique design, but as the demand for smart glasses grows, companies like Samsung and Google are ramping up their own efforts to release advanced AI-powered smart glasses. These new entrants are putting pressure on Meta to enhance its existing offerings. In response to this rising competition, Meta is planning a major upgrade to its Ray-Ban smart glasses, including the addition of displays. According to a report from the Financial Times, Meta plans to launch a version of Ray-Ban smart glasses with a display feature by the second half of 2025.

The new version of these glasses is expected to be a significant leap forward from the current models, offering users a more immersive, hands-free experience. The addition of a display will enable users to interact with notifications more effectively and engage with Meta's AI system in real-time. The glasses will allow for much more than just receiving notifications—they are anticipated to display additional contextual information such as navigation directions, reminders, and details from a user’s phone or smartwatch, all in an unobtrusive and visually accessible manner.

Currently, Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses are equipped with a voice assistant that enables users to perform various functions hands-free, such as making calls, sending messages, and controlling different settings. The voice assistant interacts with the user through built-in speakers, providing responses without the need for external headphones. This makes the glasses extremely convenient, especially when users are on the go. The glasses also maintain a classic, stylish design, characteristic of Ray-Ban’s well-established brand, ensuring that they are not only functional but also fashionable and comfortable to wear. Bluetooth connectivity allows the glasses to sync with smartphones, enabling users to receive notifications and interact with their devices without having to touch their phones. Certain models of the glasses even include a small camera, allowing for discreet photo and video capture. The glasses also feature touch-sensitive controls built into the frame, providing an intuitive way to manage media playback and take calls, making them a versatile piece of tech.

While the current models do not have a visual display, the upcoming third-generation Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, expected to be released in 2025, will include a display that will elevate the user experience even further. This addition will open the door to new possibilities, such as reading incoming messages, checking reminders, and viewing real-time updates on various activities, all from a single pair of stylish glasses. The enhanced functionality of the glasses will not only make them more user-friendly but also more immersive, with the ability to interact with information without having to constantly look at a phone or smartwatch.

In parallel to the Ray-Ban smart glasses, Meta is also developing its highly anticipated Orion smart glasses, which are expected to revolutionize the augmented reality (AR) space. Introduced in September 2024, Orion is billed as the most advanced AR glasses with the largest field of view in the smallest form factor to date. The Orion glasses are designed to offer an immersive AR experience, allowing users to seamlessly blend digital content with the physical world. Features like multitasking windows, life-size holograms, and large-screen entertainment will make the Orion glasses a powerful tool for both work and play. Meta promises that these glasses will be lightweight and versatile enough to be used both indoors and outdoors, giving users the ability to connect and collaborate remotely while enjoying the benefits of AR.

The Orion glasses aim to bring the futuristic concept of AR technology to life, drawing inspiration from popular science fiction depictions, such as the face computers seen in Marvel’s Iron Man. However, despite the exciting potential of the Orion glasses, Meta faces the challenge of making such an advanced piece of technology a practical and integral part of everyday life. As of now, Meta plans to ship its first commercial AR glasses to consumers in 2027, with the hope that the technology will be refined and ready for widespread use by then.

While these developments in both Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses and the Orion AR glasses are certainly exciting, they mark only the beginning of Meta's ambitious plans in the wearable technology market. Meta is positioning itself to lead the next wave of innovation in AR and smart glasses, aiming to bring these futuristic devices to consumers who want a seamless integration of digital and physical worlds. With both of these products in development, Meta is setting the stage for an entirely new way of interacting with technology, blending cutting-edge AI features with everyday life in a way that feels natural, intuitive, and practical for users across the globe. As the competition continues to heat up, it will be fascinating to see how Meta evolves its technology to stay ahead in the rapidly developing wearable tech industry.
