Maharashtra deadlock continues ten days later: Eknath Shinde cancels meetings, Ajit Pawar rushes to Delhi

The ongoing impasse over the selection of Maharashtra's next Chief Minister continues to generate significant political drama, as key players within the Mahayuti alliance deliberate on leadership roles amidst heightened public and media attention. Caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s cancellation of meetings, citing health issues, has only added to the suspense. Shinde, who is reportedly battling a throat infection and fever, has been recuperating in his hometown of Satara, delaying his return to Mumbai and official duties. This health-related pause has further postponed the much-anticipated meeting of the Mahayuti leaders, initially planned to finalize portfolio allocations and discuss the future governance strategy for the state. However, sources from the Shiv Sena have downplayed the urgency, clarifying that the BJP, as the largest party in the coalition, is expected to take the lead in scheduling discussions.

The Mahayuti, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar-led NCP, secured a landslide victory in the Maharashtra Assembly elections held on November 20, collectively winning 230 out of 288 seats. The BJP emerged as the dominant force with 132 seats, followed by the Shiv Sena and NCP with 57 and 41 seats, respectively. This commanding performance has positioned the coalition as the central player in Maharashtra’s political landscape. However, the question of leadership has become a contentious issue. Speculation is rife that Devendra Fadnavis, a seasoned BJP leader and former Chief Minister, is the frontrunner for the top post, given the BJP’s superior numbers and influence within the alliance.

Adding another layer of intrigue, NCP leader Ajit Pawar has flown to Delhi for high-level consultations with the BJP leadership. His visit is seen as crucial to resolving disagreements over key portfolios and ensuring a smooth power-sharing arrangement. Sources suggest that Pawar will also discuss broader alliance strategies to maintain unity among the three parties. Meanwhile, BJP President JP Nadda has appointed Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and senior leader Vijay Rupani as observers for the BJP legislative party meeting scheduled for December 4. This meeting is expected to play a pivotal role in formalizing leadership decisions and portfolio distribution.

In the midst of these political developments, Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde, son of Eknath Shinde, has quashed rumors about his potential appointment as Deputy Chief Minister. In a strongly worded statement, Shrikant clarified that he is not vying for any ministerial position, dismissing the reports as baseless speculation. He reiterated his commitment to serving his Lok Sabha constituency and the Shiv Sena without any aspirations for power. Reflecting on his past choices, Shrikant highlighted that he had previously declined an opportunity to become a Cabinet minister in the central government after the NDA's Lok Sabha victory, emphasizing his focus on grassroots work and party responsibilities.

Caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has echoed a similar sentiment, leaving the decision on Maharashtra’s next Chief Minister entirely to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP leadership. Shinde has assured his coalition partners and the public that he will not be an obstacle in the decision-making process, signaling his willingness to step aside if necessary for the alliance’s greater good. Meanwhile, Ajit Pawar has been vocal in his assertion that the Chief Minister’s position will go to the BJP, aligning with the general expectations within the political circles.

As the suspense builds, Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule has announced that the new government’s oath-taking ceremony will occur on December 5 in Mumbai. This announcement suggests that the alliance is working under a tight deadline to finalize its leadership and governance structure. However, the extended deliberations highlight the complexities of coalition politics, particularly in a state as politically significant as Maharashtra. The ongoing discussions reflect the intricate balancing act required to manage competing ambitions while maintaining unity within a diverse and powerful alliance.

The stakes remain high for all three coalition partners, as the leadership decision will set the tone for governance in Maharashtra for the next five years. With public expectations soaring after the Mahayuti's sweeping electoral mandate, the alliance faces immense pressure to deliver on its promises while navigating the challenges of coalition politics. As the December 5 deadline approaches, all eyes are on the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP to see how they resolve their differences and chart a unified path forward.
