PV Sindhu dismisses retirement talk: Definitely playing next couple of years

Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu has expressed her determination to continue competing at the highest level for the next few years, with the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics being a goal on her horizon. However, she clarified that her immediate priority is to stay fit and consistent as she enters the latter stages of her career. Sindhu's recent victory at the Syed Modi International badminton tournament, where she clinched the title, ended a prolonged title drought, and she views this win as a potential turning point in her career.

At 29, the former world champion stressed the significance of maintaining an injury-free run to continue performing at her best on the international circuit. Sindhu emphasized that experience is an advantage at her age, and with her vast experience, she plans to continue playing for at least the next couple of years. Speaking to reporters after her triumph, she said, "This (win) will definitely give me a lot of confidence. Being 29 is an advantage in many ways because I have a lot of experience. Being smart and experienced is key, and I'm definitely going to play for the next couple of years."

Sindhu highlighted the importance of staying injury-free, as it remains crucial for her career longevity. She added, "My main goal is to stay injury-free, which is very, very important. Los Angeles (Olympics) is still too far away. I will definitely play, but the main thing is staying injury-free and enjoying the sport. If I stay fit, then why not?"

This win marked her first title since July 2022, and Sindhu is hopeful it signals the start of a resurgence in her career. Reflecting on the victory, she noted, "I'm very happy that I'm finishing off with a win. Now it's time to just go back, relax, and start again in January. I hope this is a comeback, and I'm looking forward to many more victories."

Looking ahead, Sindhu shared her plans to play in upcoming tournaments in Malaysia, India, Indonesia, and Thailand. However, with a growing awareness of the demands on her body, she acknowledged the need to be selective about the tournaments she participates in. "I'll be playing the upcoming tournaments in Malaysia, India, Indonesia, and Thailand. Obviously, we'll have to pick and choose tournaments because I'll have to be smart enough to decide what to play and what not. I need to be much smarter in terms of that."

Sindhu's victory at the Syed Modi International capped off a successful day for India, with fellow shuttlers Lakshya Sen and Treesa-Gayatri also winning titles, highlighting the growing strength of Indian badminton on the international stage.
