Video: Isro's PSLV-C60's space launch with SpaDeX satellites


India achieved a remarkable milestone in its space exploration journey with the successful launch of the PSLV-C60 rocket carrying the SpaDeX mission on December 30, 2024. This historic event unfolded at 10:00 PM IST from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, marking a critical step in India's pursuit of orbital docking technology.

The SpadeX mission, short for Space Docking Experiment, aims to demonstrate the intricate technology required for rendezvous and docking in orbit—an essential capability for future space endeavors, including India's proposed space station. Such advancements are key to enabling long-term human presence in space and supporting international collaborations in space exploration.

The mission features two satellites, designated as the Chaser and the Target, which will initially drift apart to a distance of 10-15 kilometers. Over the course of ten days, the Chaser will execute a series of precise, controlled maneuvers to gradually close this gap, culminating in a successful docking operation. This delicate process will be monitored and guided by advanced algorithms and state-of-the-art navigation systems.

To enhance the mission's utility, each satellite has been equipped with sophisticated payloads. These include a high-resolution camera for detailed observation and a radiation monitoring device, which will yield critical data for upcoming human spaceflight missions. The payloads are expected to contribute significantly to the understanding of orbital dynamics and environmental conditions in space.

The successful launch and anticipated docking maneuvers are expected to elevate India’s standing in the global space community. By mastering orbital docking, ISRO moves closer to executing more complex missions, such as assembling modules of a space station, enabling spacecraft refueling, and conducting large-scale international collaborations.
