At the ceremony, a Telangana minister chastises an IAS officer, saying, Do you lack common sense

Telangana Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy has ignited a storm of controversy following his public outburst against Karimnagar District Collector Pamela Satpathy during a government function on Friday. The incident, which was captured on video and widely circulated on social media, has drawn widespread condemnation from political leaders, social media users, and citizens who are questioning the minister’s conduct.

The incident occurred during an event attended by Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who was in Karimnagar to inaugurate various development projects. Reddy reportedly became agitated when he believed there had been a breach of protocol during the ceremony. In an unexpected turn of events, the Revenue Minister lashed out at the district collector, publicly questioning her competence and calling into question her "common sense." The situation escalated when Reddy continued to berate Satpathy in front of both officials and the public, causing significant discomfort among those present. Despite the collector’s attempts to calm the situation and explain her side of the matter, the minister pressed on with his criticism.

Adding to the controversy, another state minister was observed addressing Satpathy in a similarly harsh and rude manner during the same event, further compounding the situation and fueling public anger. The public nature of the confrontation, particularly in front of a Union Minister, only served to amplify the criticism directed at Reddy. Social media erupted with discussions about the incident, with many expressing outrage over the way an esteemed civil servant was treated in front of the public, undermining the dignity of her office and the broader ethos of governance.

Political leaders from across the spectrum were quick to weigh in on the matter. BRS leader K Kavitha, a prominent member of the ruling party, voiced her strong disapproval of the incident. In a sharply worded post on social media platform X, Kavitha denounced Reddy's behavior as “absolutely shameful and unacceptable.” She made it clear that his actions were not just an insult to Satpathy but also a direct affront to the principles of good governance and professionalism that civil servants are expected to uphold. "Such behavior is not just an attack on an individual but an assault on the very ethos of public service and governance," she wrote.

Kavitha also highlighted the gendered aspect of the incident, describing Reddy's actions as an example of misogyny and arrogance that have no place in public office. She called on the Congress party, which is the ruling party in Telangana, to take immediate action against the minister, asserting that public officials, especially women, must be treated with respect and dignity at all times. "We stand firmly with the esteemed lady collector and demand accountability from the minister and the Congress Party," Kavitha wrote in her post.

The issue has also triggered a wider debate about the treatment of public servants, particularly women in leadership positions, within the political sphere. Critics argue that such instances of public humiliation reflect a troubling trend of disrespect toward women in power. The event in Karimnagar has also reignited discussions about the need for stronger protections for civil servants against political interference and bullying. Many believe that political figures should set an example by demonstrating respect and decency, especially when dealing with government officials who are entrusted with critical responsibilities.

This incident is not isolated, as Telangana, like many other states, has experienced increasing political tensions within its ruling factions. Some commentators believe that the power struggle within the state's leadership could be contributing to such public outbursts. In this context, Reddy’s actions may reflect deeper rifts within the political establishment in Telangana, where party loyalty and personal rivalries sometimes take precedence over effective governance.

As the controversy unfolds, it remains to be seen whether the Congress party will take any action against Reddy for his public chastisement of the district collector or whether the matter will be swept under the rug. With the public closely watching the responses of political leaders, this incident may have wider implications for how political leaders interact with government officials and civil servants in the future. Many are calling for a more respectful and professional approach to politics, where individuals are held accountable for their actions, particularly when they hold positions of power and influence.
