Delhi will cast its ballot on February 5; the AAP hopes to win a hat-trick on the 8th

The stage is set for a high-stakes election in Delhi on February 5, as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Congress gear up for a fierce triangular contest. With the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) now in effect, the poll battle marks a significant moment for all three parties in the politically charged national capital. The results will be announced on February 8, alongside by-elections in Milkipur (Uttar Pradesh) and Erode East (Tamil Nadu).

AAP’s Fight for a Hat-Trick Amid Corruption Allegations

The AAP, which won landslide victories in 2015 and 2020 with 67 and 62 seats, respectively, faces a stern test in retaining power. Allegations of corruption, including Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation after his bail in the liquor policy case, have cast a shadow over the party. Nevertheless, the AAP hopes its welfare schemes for women and the elderly, alongside its promise of monthly compensation to temple priests and gurdwara granthis, will counter anti-incumbency and opposition attacks.

BJP’s Bid to Reclaim Delhi After 26 Years

The BJP, buoyed by its dominance in the Delhi Lok Sabha polls and recent state victories in Haryana and Maharashtra, is aiming to end its 26-year-long drought in Delhi’s assembly. Campaigning under the slogan "Aapda ko hatana hai, BJP ko laana hai," the party has aggressively targeted the AAP over corruption allegations and alleged extravagance, including the controversial renovation of the Chief Minister’s residence, nicknamed the ‘Sheeshmahal.’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have led the BJP’s charge, using these issues to galvanize voters. The arrests of senior AAP leaders like Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Satyendra Jain have further bolstered the BJP's campaign narrative.

Congress Struggling to Gain Momentum

The Congress, which once held a stronghold in Delhi with a 15-year rule, finds itself struggling to make a significant impact. While its alliance with the AAP for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections showcased some collaboration, the party is contesting this election alone. The recently announced 'Pyari Didi Yojana,' promising Rs 2,500 monthly to eligible women, is seen as an attempt to counter AAP’s welfare promises. However, Congress’ lack of a strong ground presence and visible leadership in the campaign may hinder its chances.

Campaigning Heats Up Despite the Winter Chill

With temperatures dipping, the political environment in Delhi is heating up as the election nears. The AAP is leveraging its governance record and schemes like the Mahila Samaan Yojana to retain voter trust. Meanwhile, the BJP’s aggressive push against corruption and its narrative of governance under Modi’s leadership have kept it in the spotlight. The Congress remains a wildcard, needing to ramp up its campaign efforts quickly to stay competitive.

The February 5 election will be a litmus test for all three parties, with the results likely to shape the political discourse in the capital and beyond.
