"Educate us": Kunal Kamra queries the CEO of Blinkit over delivery partners' pay

Comedian Kunal Kamra's pointed remarks about the gig economy and platform exploitation sparked significant discussion following Blinkit co-founder and CEO Albinder Dhindsa's lighthearted New Year's Eve post on X. Dhindsa’s post highlighted popular orders on Blinkit during the festivities, including over 1.22 lakh packs of condoms, nearly 46,000 bottles of mineral water, and other party essentials, with the comment, “Prep for after party?”

Kamra, in a sharp response, turned the focus to the conditions of Blinkit’s delivery agents. He questioned Dhindsa on the average wages paid to delivery workers in 2024, underscoring the broader issue of gig worker exploitation.

In a follow-up post, Kamra elaborated on his critique of the gig economy, accusing platform owners of exploiting workers under the guise of offering flexible opportunities. He likened their operations to landlords who profit without tangible assets, arguing that their reliance on data-driven models disproportionately benefits corporations at the expense of workers.

Kamra’s comments included a call for regulatory oversight, stating, “Someday there will be regulation that humbles them.” He expressed his dismay at what he described as a lack of creativity and innovation among platform owners, asserting that their business models hinge on extracting value from workers while providing insufficient pay and benefits to meet their aspirations.

The comedian’s remarks have added to ongoing debates about the gig economy, including worker rights, pay equity, and the ethical responsibilities of platform-based businesses. Kamra’s stance resonates with calls for reform in the gig economy, which has faced increasing scrutiny for prioritizing profitability over fair labor practices.
