India has called on Bangladeshi authorities to ensure a fair trial for Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a Hindu monk arrested in Dhaka on November 25, 2024. Das is facing sedition charges in connection with his role in a protest against the persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh. His bail application was rejected on January 2, 2025, despite his repeated requests for release.
During a media briefing on January 3, 2025, Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, emphasized the need for a fair trial in the case, reiterating India’s concern over the monk’s treatment.
The arrest occurred after Das, who had been vocal about the mistreatment of Hindus in Bangladesh, addressed a rally in October 2024, where he was accused of disrespecting the Bangladeshi flag. The charges are considered by some as an attempt to silence dissent and intimidate those speaking out about minority rights. Das’ involvement in leading protests against violence and discrimination towards Hindus has made him a significant figure in the country’s religious and political landscape.
His arrest was followed by the detention of two other monks who attempted to meet him in prison, further escalating tensions. Das has publicly stated that the sedition charges were politically motivated, aiming to dismantle the leadership of protests demanding better protection for minorities, particularly in the wake of rising violence against Hindus.
The recent violence and unrest in Bangladesh, which intensified after the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, have heightened concerns for the safety and rights of religious minorities, especially Hindus. Since June 2024, Bangladesh has experienced a wave of protests, initially sparked by demands for government job quotas but eventually turning into widespread anti-government demonstrations.
In light of these developments, India's call for a fair trial reflects broader concerns about the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh, as well as the growing political instability in the region.
