Former cricketer Ambati Rayudu has expressed his belief that young talent Tilak Varma is poised to become a key all-format player for the Indian cricket team. Rayudu’s comments came after Tilak’s brilliant, match-winning performance during the second T20I against England in Chennai on January 25. The 22-year-old left-handed batter played a stellar knock, remaining unbeaten on 72 off 55 balls to guide India to a thrilling 2-wicket victory in their chase of 166 runs.
Tilak’s innings was crucial in the face of a challenging situation. As wickets fell at the other end, he shifted gears to take on the role of a finisher, maintaining his composure and helping his team secure the win. He formed important partnerships with Washington Sundar and Ravi Bishnoi, ensuring India got over the line despite the pressure. His mature approach underlined his potential to perform under pressure and win matches for his team in the future.
Rayudu, speaking to Star Sports, praised Tilak’s maturity and ability to handle match situations with poise, highlighting that the 23-year-old’s performance is indicative of his promise across all formats of the game. Rayudu said, “I feel India has got a huge superstar, and he can become an all-format player. It’s not that he is only a T20 player. Considering the maturity he showed today (India vs. England 2nd T20I), he has the ability to be a match-winner for India for many years. So I feel he should be backed in every format.”
Tilak’s consistency has been impressive, with 318 runs under his belt since his last dismissal in T20Is. Notably, he has scored two centuries during this period, showcasing his growing confidence and skill. Rayudu emphasized that Tilak is repaying the faith that has been placed in him, particularly by captain Suryakumar Yadav. He added, “He is a superstar cricketer, and I have seen him grow in Hyderabad. He has played four extraordinary knocks. Since Suryakumar Yadav has become the captain, the confidence he has been given and the trust that has been shown in him, he is repaying it fully.”
Tilak will next be in action for India during the 3rd T20I against England, scheduled to take place in Rajkot on Tuesday, January 28. A victory for India in this match would not only help them seal the T20I series but also further solidify Tilak’s growing reputation as one of the team’s most exciting prospects. With such remarkable performances already in his young career, many are excited to see the potential future star shine across all formats for India in the years to come.
