Los Angeles Fires: As Mayor Karen Bass fights for political survival, criticism of her grows

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is facing growing scrutiny as wildfires, intensified by hurricane-strength winds, wreak havoc across the city. This unprecedented disaster has posed a severe test to her leadership, coming at a critical moment in her first term as mayor. The fires have not only ravaged large swaths of the city but have also exacerbated longstanding issues such as housing shortages, homelessness, and inadequate resources for first responders. For Bass, who was sworn in just two years ago, the crisis marks a pivotal moment in her political career, and how she handles the situation could shape her future in office.

During a press conference on Thursday, Bass addressed the situation, trying to reassure the public that she was in communication with key personnel throughout the crisis. "Although I wasn’t physically here, I was in touch with many of the individuals standing here throughout the entire time. LA has to be strong, united," she said. "We will reject those who seek to divide us and seek to misinform." While her words were intended to inspire unity and strength, they have not been enough to quell the backlash from critics who are questioning her leadership in the face of such a catastrophic event.

Bass, a 71-year-old Democrat with decades of experience as a legislator, is known for her coalition-building style. However, her approach to governance is now being tested by the demands of her mayoral role. Critics have particularly focused on her absence from the city during the early days of the fire crisis, which set the stage for a wave of backlash. Her critics, including high-profile figures like her former mayoral opponent Rick Caruso and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, have been vocal in condemning her for being out of the country when the wildfires began wreaking havoc on the city.

Rick Caruso, who ran against Bass in the 2022 mayoral election, did not hold back in his criticism. Speaking on local television, Caruso, a wealthy real estate developer, stated, "We have got a mayor that is out of the country, and we have got a city that is burning." He went on to express his personal distress, noting that two of his children’s homes had been destroyed by the fires. He compared the state of the city to that of a "third-world country," suggesting that the city was ill-prepared for such a crisis.

Elon Musk, an outspoken critic of Bass, also took to social media to weigh in on the controversy. Musk referred to the mayor as “utterly incompetent” in a post on his social media platform X. Musk’s comments gained significant traction, particularly among conservative groups who were already upset about Bass’ decision to cut the city’s fire department budget in July. Although that cut was later reversed with additional funding, critics continue to question whether the department had the necessary resources to deal with the scale of the fires.

The crisis has prompted further scrutiny from state officials as well. California Governor Gavin Newsom has ordered an investigation into the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) for failing to maintain proper water pressure during the disaster. This failure was particularly concerning, as adequate water pressure is crucial for firefighting efforts. Moreover, an online petition on Change.org demanding Bass’ resignation has gained considerable momentum, with over 45,000 signatures as of now. The petition, created by a user identified only as "Frustrated Californian," accuses Bass of "gross mismanagement" and failing to adequately respond to the growing crisis.

Bass’ leadership style, which has long been centered around building coalitions and fostering collaboration, is now facing its most significant test. Political analysts, including Fernando Guerra, have emphasized the need for a mayor to take a more assertive and visible role in moments of crisis. Guerra noted that while Bass’ collaborative approach was effective in legislative settings, it has yet to prove itself in the high-pressure environment of crisis management. Bass’ critics argue that she has not displayed the necessary decisiveness, urgency, or visibility required to lead the city through such a critical period.

Bass has pledged to conduct a thorough review of the city’s response to the disaster once the fires are under control. She has promised to investigate what went wrong and what could have been done differently. However, experts say that the true test of her leadership will come in the aftermath of the disaster, as she will be responsible for overseeing the city’s recovery and rebuilding efforts. These efforts will include addressing the extensive damage to homes and businesses, particularly in affluent areas such as Pacific Palisades and Malibu, which have been devastated by the fires.

The residents of these areas, many of whom are wealthy and politically influential, are known for their low tolerance for slow recovery efforts. Political strategist Michael Trujillo pointed out that the speed and effectiveness of Bass’ response to the rebuilding process will heavily influence her political legacy. If Bass can successfully manage the recovery, balancing the needs of all Angelenos, including those affected by the fires, she could emerge from the crisis with her leadership solidified. On the other hand, if recovery efforts are slow or perceived as ineffective, it could undermine her political career and damage her reputation as mayor.

The mayor’s ability to navigate these complex challenges—such as addressing homelessness, managing limited construction resources, and rebuilding neighborhoods decimated by wildfires—will be closely watched by both her supporters and detractors. If Bass can prove that she has the political acumen to manage such a multifaceted crisis, she may emerge from this difficult period stronger and more politically secure. However, if she fails to deliver on the promises of recovery, her tenure could be marred by the crisis and the criticisms it has sparked. The next few months will be critical in shaping how Mayor Karen Bass is remembered in the political history of Los Angeles.
