Name change to Vijay Das, not Indian: Who is Saif's assailant, Mohammad Shehzad

The Mumbai Police have successfully apprehended the individual responsible for the shocking attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan at his luxurious Bandra home. The arrest followed a relentless three-day manhunt involving 35 police teams, extensive CCTV analysis, advanced facial recognition technology, and questioning of several individuals. The accused, identified as Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, was captured from a labor camp near a metro construction site in Thane’s Kasarvadavali, located approximately 35 kilometers from Saif’s residence.

The harrowing incident unfolded in the early hours of Thursday, January 16, at around 1:37 AM, when Shehzad was caught on CCTV entering the Satguru Sharan building, where Saif resides with his family. The intruder managed to bypass security measures and gained access to the actor's home. Shehzad was discovered by a house help in the bedroom of Saif’s younger son, Jeh, prompting Saif and his wife, Kareena Kapoor Khan, to rush to the scene. In the ensuing confrontation, Shehzad attacked Saif with a knife, stabbing him six times in the neck and back before fleeing the scene. A severely injured Saif was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent two emergency surgeries. Fortunately, doctors have reported that Saif is now in stable condition and recovering under close observation.

Following the attack, the Mumbai Police launched a massive investigation to track down the suspect. CCTV footage from the building and surrounding areas provided critical leads, showing Shehzad leaving the premises at 1:47 AM and later appearing at Bandra railway station. The investigation revealed that Shehzad had been on the move, frequently changing locations to avoid capture. The police deployed facial recognition technology to identify him and traced his movements through various parts of Mumbai, including Dadar railway station and Worli Koliwada. Posters featuring Shehzad’s image, captured from CCTV footage, were circulated widely across the city and neighboring regions to aid in his identification.

The Arrest and Shehzad’s Confession

After tracking his movements to Thane, the police zeroed in on a labor camp near a metro construction site, where Shehzad was finally apprehended on Sunday, January 19. During questioning, Shehzad confessed to entering Saif Ali Khan’s residence with the intent to commit theft. He admitted to closely monitoring news coverage about the incident and keeping his mobile phone switched off to evade detection. The police recovered multiple items of interest during the operation, which are now being analyzed for further evidence.

Who is Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad?

The investigation has revealed that Shehzad is a 30-year-old suspected Bangladeshi national who illegally entered India. He has used multiple aliases, including Vijay Das, Bijoy Das, Mohammad Ilyas, and BJ, to conceal his identity.

  • Illegal Entry: Authorities believe Shehzad crossed the border into India without valid documentation and settled in Mumbai around four to five months ago.
  • Employment: He worked as a housekeeper at Ricky’s Bar in Thane and took up other small labor jobs to sustain himself.
  • Lack of Documents: Police have confirmed that Shehzad possesses no valid Indian identification documents, further supporting the suspicion that he is a Bangladeshi national.
  • Aliases: The accused used a variety of names to evade detection and blend into the local population.
  • Mobility: Shehzad frequently moved between locations in Mumbai and its outskirts, avoiding staying in one place for long.

During a press briefing, DCP Zone 9 Dikshit Gadam stated, “Preliminary evidence strongly indicates that the accused is a Bangladeshi national. He entered India illegally and has been using false names to obscure his identity. Currently, he is known to have used the name Vijay Das. Our investigation will delve deeper into his background, his entry into India, and his connections, if any, to a larger network.”

The Investigation and Legal Proceedings

Before Shehzad’s arrest, the police faced significant challenges in tracking him down. He was spotted multiple times on CCTV, including outside Dadar railway station and near Worli Koliwada, but he managed to evade capture by constantly relocating. The breakthrough came when police identified his connection to a labor contractor in Thane, who provided crucial details about Shehzad’s whereabouts.

Shehzad was presented before a local Mumbai court, where the police sought his custody for further investigation. Authorities are now probing the possibility of his involvement in other crimes and are working to establish whether he was part of a larger criminal network or operated independently. Efforts are also underway to verify his immigration status and establish how he entered India undetected.

Public Reaction and Saif Ali Khan’s Recovery

The attack on Saif Ali Khan has sent shockwaves through Bollywood and raised serious concerns about security for high-profile individuals in Mumbai. Fans and industry colleagues have expressed relief over Saif’s recovery while commending the Mumbai Police for their swift and determined action in resolving the case.

The actor, known for his roles in iconic films like Dil Chahta Hai and the Sacred Games series, is currently recuperating at home with his family. Kareena Kapoor Khan and their children, Taimur and Jeh, are reportedly taking additional security measures to ensure their safety.

This incident has also sparked discussions about the risks posed by illegal immigration and the need for stricter monitoring and enforcement of security protocols in residential complexes, even in upscale neighborhoods.

Larger Implications

The case highlights broader concerns about urban security and the challenges of addressing illegal immigration. Shehzad’s ability to enter the country undetected, obtain employment, and navigate the city while avoiding capture underscores vulnerabilities in current systems. Authorities are now facing increasing pressure to bolster border security and improve surveillance mechanisms in densely populated urban areas.

While the Mumbai Police’s successful operation has been widely praised, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks prominent individuals face and the importance of robust security measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
