Stargate Project, a new business announced by OpenAI, will invest $500 billion to build AI data centers

In a move that has captured widespread attention, OpenAI, during the Trump inauguration event, unveiled a new venture called the Stargate Project. This ambitious initiative aims to "build a new AI infrastructure" and is backed by a massive investment of $500 billion over the next four years. The Stargate Project's goal is to revolutionize AI development through the construction of cutting-edge data centres across the United States, with an initial investment of $100 billion set to be deployed immediately.

The project will be a joint effort between OpenAI and other key players, including SoftBank, Oracle, and MGX. While OpenAI will focus on operations, SoftBank will take charge of the financial aspects. Masayoshi Son, CEO of SoftBank, will serve as the chairman of the Stargate Project, steering its overall direction and ensuring the financial strategies align with the project’s ambitious goals.

The Stargate Project has already secured collaborations with some of the most influential tech companies in the industry. OpenAI will work closely with Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, and Oracle to design and operate the computing infrastructure. This marks a continuation of OpenAI’s long-standing partnership with NVIDIA, dating back to 2016, and its more recent collaboration with Oracle. As part of this alliance, Oracle, NVIDIA, and OpenAI will pool resources and expertise to build and maintain this robust new AI infrastructure.

OpenAI is confident that the Stargate Project will yield significant benefits for the US economy. According to the company, the project is expected to strengthen America’s leadership in AI, create hundreds of thousands of jobs, and generate substantial economic advantages for the global community. In addition to fostering the re-industrialization of the United States, the project is also seen as a strategic initiative to safeguard national security for the US and its allies.

Microsoft, which has long been involved in a partnership with OpenAI, also provided an update on its collaboration with the company. The partnership, which remains intact until 2030, allows Microsoft continued access to OpenAI’s intellectual property and provides revenue-sharing arrangements as well as exclusive rights to OpenAI’s APIs. As part of the Stargate Project, Microsoft is expected to deepen its integration with OpenAI, further expanding its use of Azure to support the infrastructure.

A significant new development in the OpenAI-Microsoft relationship is a shift in the exclusivity agreement for additional capacity. Microsoft has secured the “right of first refusal” (ROFR), which gives it the option to reject or accept new capacity that OpenAI may seek to build in the future. This adjustment marks an important evolution in their partnership, signaling that Microsoft will have priority when it comes to scaling up infrastructure for AI projects.

In conclusion, the Stargate Project is set to be a transformative initiative with far-reaching implications for AI development and the global economy. With significant investments and powerful collaborations in place, the project promises to enhance technological capabilities while benefiting the US economy and national security.
