Third-party verification is being implemented by Telegram to counteract scams on the network


Telegram, one of the world's leading messaging platforms, has rolled out a new third-party verification system aimed at tackling scams and improving transparency on the platform. This new system responds to concerns over Telegram's susceptibility to fraudulent activities, such as phishing attacks, fake investment channels, and cyber-bullying. By allowing verified accounts to display an additional verification icon, Telegram hopes to ensure users can easily identify legitimate sources of information, particularly public figures, businesses, and organizations.

The third-party verification system operates independently of Telegram's existing internal verification process, which is typically reserved for high-profile accounts such as celebrities and large organizations. Instead of the traditional blue checkmark, these verified accounts and chats will feature a unique icon to the left of their name. Users can click on these icons to access details about the verifying service and understand why the account or chat has been verified. This new decentralised approach provides an extra layer of trust, which is especially important for those navigating the platform where misinformation can spread quickly.

This system is part of Telegram's broader strategy to address security issues and improve trust on the platform. In addition to the third-party verification initiative, Telegram is introducing a number of features designed to enhance user experience and safety. These include advanced search filters for more refined chat results, the ability to scan QR codes directly within the app on both iOS and Android devices, and a new feature that allows users to convert digital gifts into NFTs.

In an effort to combat fraudulent activity, Telegram has also bolstered its reporting tools, enabling users to more effectively flag suspicious accounts. This comes after recent controversies, including the arrest of CEO Pavel Durov by French authorities over accusations of enabling illegal activities on the platform. In response to these concerns, Telegram has updated its privacy policy, disabled certain features prone to misuse, and taken a more proactive approach to moderation.

Telegram’s recent efforts to address security concerns are not only in response to its critics but also align with the company’s growing profitability. For the first time in 2024, Telegram reported reaching profitability, with revenue surpassing $1 billion. Much of this success is attributed to its Premium subscription model, privacy-focused advertisements, and the launch of Telegram Stars, a feature designed to support creators and public figures.

The rollout of the third-party verification system and other new features highlights Telegram’s commitment to creating a safer, more transparent space for its users, as the company continues to evolve in a competitive and sometimes contentious digital landscape.
