Three Indians, including Jasprit Bumrah, were selected for the 2024 ICC Test Team

Jasprit Bumrah's selection in the ICC Test Team of the Year for 2024 comes after a historic and career-best performance in the longest format of the game. His phenomenal achievements in 2024 have not only placed him as the highest wicket-taker of the year, but also established his dominance on the international stage. With a staggering 71 wickets from 13 matches (26 innings), Bumrah's record-breaking spree included five 5-wicket hauls and an astonishing average of just 14.92. His remarkable consistency and ability to deliver match-winning performances earned him the top spot in the ICC Test rankings, a feat that had eluded him previously. Furthermore, Bumrah's performance saw him register the best-ever ratings by an Indian bowler in Test cricket, a testament to his evolution as one of the finest fast bowlers in world cricket.

Joining Bumrah in the esteemed lineup is Yashasvi Jaiswal, the young Indian opener who had a breakthrough year with the bat. Jaiswal amassed a total of 1478 runs across 15 matches (29 innings) at an impressive average of 54.74, marking his arrival on the international scene. His tally included three centuries and nine fifties, with several of his knocks proving crucial in India’s Test successes. His remarkable consistency throughout the year saw him finish as the second-highest run-scorer in Test cricket for the year, further solidifying his status as one of India's most promising talents.

Ravindra Jadeja, who is widely regarded for his all-round abilities, also found his place in the team following a stellar year. Jadeja’s contributions were pivotal both with the bat and ball. He scored 527 runs at an average of 29.27, while also taking 48 wickets at an average of 24.29. These contributions helped him enter India's top five highest wicket-takers in Test cricket, surpassing the legendary bowlers Ishant Sharma and Zaheer Khan in the process. Jadeja’s inclusion underscores his importance to the Indian team, as he continues to be a reliable figure with both bat and ball.

Pat Cummins, the Australian captain, was once again entrusted with the leadership of the ICC Test Team for the second consecutive year. Under his captaincy, Australia had a successful 2024, winning six of their nine matches. Cummins’ personal performance as a bowler was also exceptional, as he finished as Australia’s highest wicket-taker with 37 wickets at an average of 24.02. His leadership was instrumental in guiding Australia to series victories over Pakistan, New Zealand, and India, further cementing his position as one of the best captains in modern Test cricket.

The team also features a strong English presence, with Joe Root and Harry Brook both selected for their outstanding batting performances throughout the year. Root, a stalwart of English cricket, continued to deliver consistent runs, while Brook’s explosive form added much-needed flair to the middle order. Ben Duckett, with his solid performances as an opener, also made his mark in the Test format. Jamie Smith, who had a phenomenal debut year as a wicketkeeper for England, earned a spot due to his impressive glovework and batting contributions.

From Sri Lanka, Kamindu Mendis was the lone representative, having delivered solid all-round performances in the format. His selection is a recognition of his contribution to Sri Lankan cricket over the year. New Zealand’s Kane Williamson and Matt Henry also made it to the team, with Williamson continuing to be a pillar for New Zealand’s batting lineup, while Henry’s consistent wicket-taking ability ensured his place in the XI.

The 2024 ICC Men’s Test Team of the Year showcases some of the brightest talents in world cricket, with Bumrah leading the charge alongside a strong Indian contingent. The blend of experienced players and promising newcomers highlights the dynamic nature of Test cricket and the rising stars who are making their mark on the format.
