A tragic incident unfolded in Kolkata as a 20-year-old second-year MBBS student at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was found dead in her residence at the ESI quarters in Kamarhati. According to police sources, preliminary investigations suggest that she may have been battling depression, which could have driven her to take such an extreme step.
The student, who lived with her mother—a doctor at the local ESI hospital—was discovered hanging inside her room late at night. Her mother had repeatedly knocked on the door, but after receiving no response, she was forced to break it open, only to find her daughter unresponsive.
With the assistance of neighbors, she rushed her daughter to the emergency ward of ESI Hospital in Kamarhati, but doctors declared her dead. Following the incident, the police registered a case of unnatural death at the Kamarhati police station, and the body was sent for post-mortem examination.
Authorities have not yet found a suicide note in the room, and the family has not filed any official complaint. While an official statement from the police is awaited, sources indicate that the student may have been suffering from a chronic illness, which could have negatively impacted her mental health.
The investigation into the case remains ongoing as officials await the post-mortem report to gather further clarity on the circumstances surrounding the incident.
