The Border Security Force (BSF) has taken strong action to prevent illegal construction activities by Bangladeshi citizens and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) within the 150-yard restricted zone along the Indo-Bangladesh border in north Bengal. In recent weeks, there has been a concerning increase in such unauthorized construction in the region, especially in areas like Mekhliganj, Cooch Behar, which has raised alarm among border security officials.
On January 31, the Border Guard Bangladesh attempted to build a sentry post bunker in the Dahgram Angarpota area, which is located very close to the international border. The BSF, upon noticing this construction activity, promptly objected, and the construction work was halted. Similarly, in Phulkadabari, Mekhliganj, a house was being constructed within the restricted 150-yard zone. Again, the BSF intervened, preventing further progress on the illegal structure.
Earlier in the same week, two houses were being constructed in the Jhikabari area of Kuchlibari, Cooch Behar, which is also within the no-construction zone near the Indo-Bangladesh border. The BSF, while patrolling the border, raised immediate objections to the construction, prompting the Border Guard Bangladesh to cease work on the unauthorized houses.
These actions by the BSF come as part of a broader effort to monitor and safeguard the Indo-Bangladesh border. Illegal construction in these sensitive areas poses a security threat, as it could be used for unauthorized activities, including smuggling or the establishment of unauthorized posts. The BSF has stressed that any construction within the restricted zone is prohibited under border security laws, and security forces are committed to preventing such violations.
The construction attempts, primarily by Bangladeshi nationals, have been seen as an effort to extend infrastructure near the border, potentially to enhance surveillance or establish illegal posts. However, the BSF has clarified that such activities are against the law and will not be tolerated.
Authorities in the region are also monitoring other similar construction attempts, as this pattern of unauthorized building has been increasing in certain areas, raising concerns about the stability and security of the border. The BSF has assured that the situation is being closely monitored, and security forces are taking all necessary actions to prevent any such violations from taking place, thus ensuring the integrity and safety of the international boundary.
Moreover, the BSF has emphasized its commitment to border security through vigilant monitoring and quick responses to prevent any smuggling activities, illegal crossings, or construction that could threaten the security infrastructure along the Indo-Bangladesh border. The force has been maintaining a high level of alertness, working with local authorities, and employing advanced surveillance technologies to ensure such illegal activities are thwarted. This continued vigilance by the BSF is seen as crucial for maintaining the security and peace along the border in the face of rising concerns over trans-border violations.
