Elon Musk's offer of $97.4 billion is rejected by the OpenAI board: Not available for purchase

The high-stakes rivalry between OpenAI and Elon Musk has intensified, with OpenAI’s board of directors unanimously rejecting a staggering $97.4 billion takeover bid from the Tesla and SpaceX CEO. This decisive move follows a dramatic series of events in which OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman not only dismissed Musk’s offer but countered with a bold $9.74 billion bid to acquire Musk’s social media company, X (formerly Twitter).

In a firm statement, OpenAI’s board chair, Bret Taylor, reaffirmed the company’s independence and mission, stating, "OpenAI is not for sale, and the board has unanimously rejected (Elon) Musk's latest attempt to disrupt his competition. Any potential reorganization of OpenAI will strengthen our nonprofit and its mission to ensure AGI benefits all of humanity." This strong response underscores OpenAI’s determination to remain focused on its long-term goal of developing artificial general intelligence (AGI) for the collective good rather than succumbing to external control or corporate interests.

Musk, who was an early backer of OpenAI before parting ways with the organization in 2018 due to disagreements over its commercial trajectory, has been one of its fiercest critics. He has repeatedly expressed concerns over OpenAI’s partnership with Microsoft and its perceived shift away from its original nonprofit roots. His failed takeover bid is widely seen as part of a broader strategy to regain influence in the AI space and counter OpenAI’s growing dominance in the industry.

Meanwhile, Altman’s counteroffer to acquire X is being viewed as a power move, signaling not only OpenAI’s financial confidence but also its willingness to challenge Musk on his own turf. Industry analysts speculate that Altman’s bid, while seemingly symbolic, could force Musk into a strategic reevaluation of his position in the AI sector. Given Musk’s ambitions with xAI—his own AI venture—it is likely that this battle will continue to escalate in both corporate and technological arenas.

With OpenAI’s rejection of Musk’s bid, the company remains independent for now. However, the unfolding drama between Musk and OpenAI has sparked discussions about the future of AI leadership, ethical AI development, and the balance of power in the tech world. As both sides continue to push their respective agendas, the competition for AI supremacy is far from over, with potential ramifications that could reshape the future of artificial intelligence and its global impact.
