IND vs. ENG: Stampede panic during Cuttack's second ODI ticket sale, with some people passing out

The chaotic scenes at Cuttack's Barabati Stadium during the ticket sale for the highly anticipated second ODI between India and England have raised serious concerns about crowd control and event management. As thousands of cricket fans flocked to the stadium, hoping to secure tickets to witness a match featuring two of the world's most powerful cricket teams, the situation quickly spiraled out of control. Many fans who had camped out overnight were left in a state of distress, with several collapsing from exhaustion and heat due to overcrowding at the ticket counters.

The overwhelming rush of people resulted in a stampede-like situation, as fans tried to force their way forward in the absence of adequate barriers and crowd management measures. Those at the front of the line were often crushed by the sheer volume of people, with some reportedly fainting due to lack of air circulation and dehydration. The disorder led to a number of injuries, though details regarding the extent of the harm were unclear in the initial reports. The situation was worsened by the absence of basic facilities like drinking water, medical teams, and proper seating arrangements for the long wait.

Cricket fans, who had been eagerly waiting for this match, were not only frustrated by the lack of resources but also by what they saw as poor planning and negligence by the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA). The OCA had previously assured that proper arrangements would be made, yet it failed to foresee the magnitude of the crowd and the necessary preparations. Locals were vocal in their complaints, calling out the administration for their failure to ensure basic amenities such as clean drinking water, restrooms, and medical aid.

A large number of fans, many of whom had travelled from distant parts of Odisha, had been standing in line since the early hours of the morning. The anticipation for a chance to watch cricket stars like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma live, both of whom are playing at Barabati Stadium for the first time in five years, made the event even more significant. The last time these two cricketers played at the stadium was during India’s ODI against the West Indies in 2019, where Kohli’s brilliant performance had secured him the Player of the Match award. The excitement to witness them live in action after such a long gap contributed to the chaotic atmosphere, as fans pushed and jostled to be among the fortunate few to get tickets.

As the situation continued to deteriorate, media reports highlighted the disarray at the ticket counters and criticized the authorities for their lack of preparedness. The Odisha Cricket Association and local officials were accused of not adequately addressing the needs of the crowds. With long lines snaking around the ticket booths and the fans becoming increasingly agitated, the situation threatened to turn into a full-blown crisis.

In response to the rapidly escalating situation, the local police, under the leadership of Cuttack Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jagmohan Meena, took swift action. Multiple police platoons were deployed to prevent further crowd surges and to restore order at the stadium gates. Security personnel attempted to control the movement of people, creating barriers to manage the flow and minimize the risk of injuries. They also worked to calm the frustrated fans, urging them to remain patient and wait their turn.

With the stampede threat averted, DCP Jagmohan Meena and other officials assured that measures would be put in place to manage the large crowds for the rest of the ticket sale process. He confirmed that the entry and exit of people would now be regulated through four designated gates, with police officers and other personnel overseeing security checks and sanitation facilities. These measures, officials hoped, would minimize congestion and ensure that the remainder of the ticket sales would proceed without further incidents.

The authorities also emphasized the importance of public cooperation in the upcoming days, urging fans to follow the guidelines and instructions given by the security personnel. "We want to ensure the safety of every person who comes here to watch the match," Meena said, urging fans to remain calm and refrain from creating panic.

This ODI marks a significant moment for cricket enthusiasts in Odisha, as it is Cuttack’s first international fixture in nearly three years. The last match held at the stadium was a T20I against South Africa in 2022. Given the anticipation and the return of international cricket to the region, this match has generated tremendous excitement. Fans in the state, who have long awaited the return of top-tier cricketing action, were understandably eager to attend. However, the challenges of crowd management and the lack of proper arrangements have raised serious concerns about how future events of this scale will be handled in the state.

The Odisha Cricket Association, which has been under intense scrutiny following the incident, is now facing calls for a review of its ticket distribution system and event management protocols. There are demands for better planning and increased investment in infrastructure to handle the large number of fans that international matches attract. Suggestions include selling more tickets online, ensuring better crowd control measures, and improving the provision of essential services like water, food, and first aid during large events.

As the excitement around the match builds, fans and officials alike are hoping that the remainder of the ticket sales process will be smoother and that the game itself will proceed without any further complications. The authorities are under immense pressure to ensure the safety and comfort of those attending, as the stakes are high for both the players and the fans who have been eagerly awaiting this international fixture.
