IPL2025: After a year, the CSK vs. MI double returns, with Hardik Pandya missing the opening game

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season is set to commence on March 22 in Kolkata, kicking off another thrilling edition of the world’s most-watched T20 tournament. One of the most anticipated fixtures of the season will take place as early as the second day, March 23, when Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) face off at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium. Dubbed the “El Clásico” of the IPL, this high-voltage encounter between the two most successful franchises is expected to set the tone for an electrifying season ahead.

Unlike IPL 2024, where CSK and MI clashed only once, fans will be treated to a double-header between the two teams in IPL 2025. The return fixture will take place at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 20. Last year, Chennai emerged victorious in their sole encounter, securing a 20-run win at Wankhede. However, both teams will be keen to establish dominance early in the new season. The IPL 2025 schedule, officially announced on February 16, has only heightened the excitement around these blockbuster clashes, as fans eagerly anticipate the renewal of this storied rivalry.

A major talking point ahead of the first encounter is the absence of Mumbai Indians’ captain, Hardik Pandya. The all-rounder has been handed a one-match suspension, carrying over from IPL 2024 after his team failed to maintain the required over-rate three times during the season. MI’s failure to qualify for the playoffs meant that his ban could not be served last year and will now take effect in the opening fixture against CSK. This development raises a crucial question: who will lead MI in Pandya’s absence? The franchise has multiple leadership options, including former skipper Rohit Sharma, who led Mumbai to five IPL titles before being replaced by Pandya in 2024. Additionally, India’s Test captain Jasprit Bumrah and T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav are also experienced candidates who could step in.

Hardik Pandya’s captaincy tenure in 2024 was fraught with challenges, as MI endured a disastrous campaign, finishing at the bottom of the points table with just four wins in 14 matches. His appointment as captain, replacing the widely respected Rohit Sharma, led to significant backlash from fans, with sections of MI supporters even booing him at various venues. As a result, IPL 2025 represents an opportunity for redemption, both for Pandya as a leader and for MI as a franchise. The high-pressure clash against CSK could set the tone for their season, making it an even more crucial fixture.

Mumbai Indians will have a demanding schedule in IPL 2025, as their matches are spaced out in such a way that they do not get the advantage of more than two consecutive home games at any stage. This will test their adaptability and resilience as they travel across various venues throughout the season. In contrast, Chennai Super Kings will enjoy a more favorable home advantage, playing four of their first six matches at their fortress, the MA Chidambaram Stadium. However, scheduling constraints and extreme summer temperatures mean that CSK has been allocated only one home game in May, when Chennai’s heat and humidity can be challenging for both players and spectators.

The rivalry between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians is the most celebrated in IPL history. With a combined total of 10 IPL titles—MI winning five and CSK also claiming five—the two teams have consistently been dominant forces in the tournament. Their head-to-head battles have produced some of the most memorable moments in IPL history, from MS Dhoni’s last-ball finishes to Kieron Pollard’s match-winning heroics. As these two heavyweights prepare to lock horns once again, the stakes are higher than ever.

With both franchises looking to make an early statement in the season, the CSK-MI clashes in IPL 2025 promise to be nothing short of spectacular. The anticipation is building, and as the tournament draws closer, fans from across the world will be eagerly waiting to see who emerges victorious in this legendary rivalry.
