Kevin Spacey has publicly responded to Guy Pearce’s recent comments about feeling "uncomfortable" while working with him on L.A. Confidential (1997). Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Spacey criticized Pearce for addressing the matter in the media rather than privately, calling on him to "grow up."
In his video, Spacey expressed disappointment, stating, "Guy Pearce, I've now read the comments that you made about me, and while I would have preferred not to have to play this out in the media, you obviously have your own reasons for wanting to do exactly that." He suggested that Pearce could have reached out to him directly instead of involving the press.
Spacey then questioned Pearce’s claims, bringing up an incident from a year after L.A. Confidential was filmed. "Did you also, by the way, tell the press that a year after we shot L.A. Confidential, you flew to Savannah, Georgia, while I was shooting Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, just to spend time with me? Did you tell the press that too? Or does that not fit into the victim narrative you have going?"
While he apologized if he had misread Pearce’s intentions, Spacey also cast doubt on the timing of his remarks, saying, "Here you are now on a mission, some 28 years later, after I've been through hell and back, to do what? Just in time to stop the bad guy? Is that what's going on here?" He ended his message by reiterating that Pearce was "not a victim" and invited him to have a conversation live on X if necessary.
Pearce’s initial comments came in a February 18 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, where he shared that while Spacey never sexually assaulted him, he had made him feel "uncomfortable." Pearce added, "I addressed and handled the situation when it took place, hence my regret at making it public now."
This exchange comes months after Spacey was acquitted in July 2023 by a London jury of sexual assault charges involving four men. The actor had maintained that his interactions were consensual and labeled the allegations as part of a "bandwagon" of false claims.
