Rohit Sharma hits back at criticism of spin overload for Champions Trophy

Rohit Sharma dismissed concerns about India's selection of five spinners for the Champions Trophy, emphasizing that the squad actually includes two full-time spinners and three all-rounders capable of contributing with both bat and ball. Speaking at the pre-match press conference in Dubai ahead of India's tournament opener, Sharma defended the team composition, pointing out that when other teams pick multiple fast-bowling all-rounders, their choices are not questioned.

Rohit explained that the Indian team management prioritized players with dual skills to bring more depth to the squad. He highlighted the importance of players like Washington Sundar and Axar Patel, who provide flexibility in both batting and bowling. He reaffirmed that India had selected players based on their strengths rather than external opinions and that the team was prepared to adapt to the conditions in Dubai.

Former cricketer Parthiv Patel and a national selector had previously criticized India's decision to carry five spinners, arguing that an extra pacer would have been more beneficial given the conditions. The Dubai International Stadium has historically favored pacers, with statistics showing they have taken more wickets than spinners in ODIs played at the venue. The recently concluded ILT20 tournament also saw fast bowlers dominating the top wicket-taking charts, with only one spinner, Wanindu Hasaranga, leading the pack.

However, Rohit Sharma dismissed the reliance on statistics, stating that India's approach remains unchanged from the ODI World Cup 2023. He expressed confidence in the squad's balance and preparation, emphasizing that their recent 3-0 series win against England had helped build momentum. Rohit acknowledged the unique challenges posed by playing in Dubai but stressed the importance of quick adaptability in both batting and bowling strategies.

India enters the Champions Trophy with strong form, having dominated England in the lead-up series. Shubman Gill was particularly impressive with 259 runs in three matches, while contributions from Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, and Rohit himself bolstered the batting lineup. Ravindra Jadeja was a standout performer with the ball, reinforcing India's confidence in their spin attack.

Sharma concluded by reiterating that India’s approach would be to assess the conditions in Dubai quickly and make the necessary tactical adjustments. He emphasized the team's experience and depth, stating that they were ready to compete at the highest level and aimed to replicate the brand of cricket that nearly won them the World Cup.
