Mahesh Kumar Choudhary, a sepoy at the Engineering Store Depot (ESD) in West Bengal, has been arrested as the key figure in a fake document racket connected to the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) recruitment scam. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) uncovered that Choudhary was at the center of a scheme that involved preparing forged or unauthenticated domicile certificates, including those from border districts and areas affected by Naxal militancy. These documents were used to facilitate the illegal recruitment of undeserving candidates for CAPF positions.
The scam, which came to light following a Calcutta High Court order, saw Choudhary collecting large sums of money from candidates, either directly or through intermediaries, in exchange for promised jobs in CAPF. The CBI initiated the investigation in August 2023, and after conducting multiple raids, Choudhary was arrested on January 31, 2025.
Choudhary was presented before a CBI court in Alipore, where he was remanded to five days of police custody for further interrogation. This case has raised serious concerns about corruption within the recruitment process, and authorities are continuing to investigate the network of individuals involved in the fraudulent activities.
