Before the match against DC, bowling coach Muralitharan says that SRH can reach the 300-run mark

Sunrisers Hyderabad's spin bowling coach and mentor, Muttiah Muralitharan, has made a bold declaration that the team is aiming to achieve what no other side has managed in Indian Premier League (IPL) history—becoming the first team to score 300 runs in a single innings. As SRH prepares for its crucial IPL 2025 encounter against Delhi Capitals on March 30, Muralitharan emphasized that the team will continue its fearless, attacking brand of cricket, which has already brought them record-breaking success in the past.

SRH’s Evolution into a Batting Powerhouse

Sunrisers Hyderabad has undergone a dramatic transformation in recent years. Traditionally known for their strong bowling attack, particularly led by their world-class spinners, the franchise has shifted its focus towards an aggressive batting approach. The inclusion of destructive power-hitters like Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen, and Nitish Kumar Reddy ahead of the 2024 season reinforced their reputation as one of the most dangerous batting line-ups in the IPL.

This aggressive strategy paid off spectacularly in IPL 2024, when SRH posted 287 runs against Royal Challengers Bangalore, setting a new record for the highest-ever IPL total. Their momentum continued into IPL 2025, as they almost surpassed that record again, scoring 286 against Rajasthan Royals in their season opener. Given this consistent ability to score mammoth totals, it appears to be only a matter of time before SRH finally breaches the 300-run barrier.

Muralitharan’s Thoughts on the 300-Run Milestone

Speaking to the media in a pre-match press conference ahead of the clash against Delhi Capitals in Visakhapatnam, Muralitharan acknowledged the growing anticipation surrounding SRH’s ability to achieve this historic feat.

"The press has made 300 a target for us, but we have closely achieved it—286, 287. You never know if it will happen. Two batters have to score big and get it there. Nothing is impossible in cricket," Muralitharan stated confidently.

His remarks suggest that SRH will persist with their aggressive batting strategy, relying on their hard-hitting batsmen to capitalize on every opportunity and push the limits of T20 cricket.

The Addition of Ishan Kishan: A Potential Game-Changer

While SRH’s batting unit was already explosive in IPL 2024, they fell short in the final, losing to Kolkata Knight Riders in a disappointing finish to an otherwise stellar season. To address this, SRH made a major acquisition in the IPL 2025 mega auction—purchasing Ishan Kishan, one of the most dynamic wicketkeeper-batters in Indian cricket.

Kishan’s aggressive intent in the powerplay, combined with the brutal strokeplay of Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and Heinrich Klaasen, gives SRH an even more intimidating batting lineup. With a player like Kishan at the top, SRH now has the potential to push the scoring rate even further and possibly reach the elusive 300-run mark.

SRH’s Mixed Start to IPL 2025 & The Challenge Ahead

Despite their record-breaking potential, SRH has had a mixed start to the IPL 2025 season, winning just one of their two matches so far. After a spectacular batting performance against Rajasthan Royals, their weaknesses were exposed in a loss to Lucknow Super Giants. The middle-order’s ability to sustain momentum and the team’s dependency on a few key batters were points of concern.

Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals come into this match full of confidence, having secured a win over Lucknow Super Giants in their opening game. Under the leadership of Rishabh Pant, DC possesses a well-balanced squad with both power hitters and experienced bowlers, making them a formidable opponent for Pat Cummins’ SRH.

Is 300 Runs in an IPL Match a Realistic Possibility?

The question remains—can Sunrisers Hyderabad break the 300-run barrier this season? While the feat still seems unrealistic in T20 cricket, SRH has already shown that it is not impossible. As Muralitharan pointed out, it will take two or three batters playing exceptionally well in the same match, along with favorable batting conditions, to make it happen.

With their explosive lineup, attacking intent, and history of setting high totals, SRH is undoubtedly the frontrunner to achieve this record. If the conditions favor strokeplay, and if their top and middle order fires in unison, the IPL might just witness its first-ever 300-run total in 2025.
