Elon Musk alleges a cyberattack on X and attributes the downtime to a coordinated group or country

On Monday, March 10, 2025, the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, experienced significant disruptions attributed to a "massive cyberattack," according to owner Elon Musk. Users worldwide reported difficulties accessing the platform, with outage tracking service Downdetector noting over 40,000 incident reports during peak periods.

The issues began around 6:00 a.m. Eastern Time, with users encountering problems such as buffering and error messages indicating posts were not loading. While some users saw services partially restored by late morning, intermittent outages persisted throughout the day.

Elon Musk addressed the situation on X, stating that the platform faces daily attacks, but this particular incident was executed with substantial resources. He suggested that either a large, coordinated group or a nation-state could be responsible. Musk further mentioned that investigations were ongoing to trace the origin of the attack.

The outages affected users across major countries, including the United States, India, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. Approximately 56% of users reported issues with the X app, 33% experienced problems with the website, and 11% had trouble with server connections.

In response to the disruptions, many frustrated users migrated to alternative social media platforms to voice their concerns. As of now, X has not provided an official statement beyond Musk's comments regarding the cause of the outages or the measures being taken to prevent future incidents.
