Google has unveiled a set of new features for Android and Pixel users, focusing on security, connectivity, and creative enhancements. The most significant update is the AI-powered Scam Detection tool for Google Messages, which aims to combat the growing threat of text message fraud. This feature, powered by advanced artificial intelligence, actively monitors SMS, MMS, and RCS messages in real time, identifying suspicious patterns indicative of scams. If a potential scam is detected, users receive an on-screen warning with options to dismiss, report, or block the sender. Importantly, Google emphasizes that all message analysis happens directly on the device to maintain user privacy, and the feature only applies to messages from unknown contacts. Scam Detection is initially launching in English in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada, with plans for a wider rollout in more countries shortly. Users who prefer not to use the feature can disable it in the Spam Protection settings of Google Messages.
In addition to scam protection, Google has introduced a real-time location-sharing feature, similar to WhatsApp’s functionality. The new capability is integrated into the Google Find My Device app, allowing users to share their live location with trusted contacts for improved safety and coordination. This feature ensures that family members or friends can track each other’s whereabouts, particularly useful for ensuring safe arrivals or planning meetups. Google has designed the system with privacy in mind, allowing users to control who can see their location and for how long. Regular notifications will remind users about active location-sharing sessions, ensuring transparency. The feature supports location tracking across different devices, enhancing cross-platform accessibility.
Pixel users are also receiving exclusive upgrades, particularly the upcoming Pixel 9 series, which will introduce innovative connectivity and creative tools. A standout feature is the ability to link GoPro cameras or other Pixel devices via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to stream from multiple angles on platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok. This functionality mirrors Apple’s multicamera mode, providing content creators and vloggers with more dynamic filming options. Additionally, the new Pixel Studio app enables users to generate stylized images and stickers of people. Google has placed strict safeguards on this tool to prevent misuse, ensuring that it cannot be exploited for creating deepfake or highly realistic AI-generated images.
