IPL2025: BCCI is urging Eden Gardens to host the match between KKR and LSG Ram Navami

The BCCI is now making a strong push to ensure Kolkata Knight Riders' highly anticipated IPL 2025 match against Lucknow Super Giants remains at its original venue, Eden Gardens, on April 6 — despite earlier considering a shift to Guwahati due to security concerns tied to Ram Navami celebrations.

Kolkata Police initially raised concerns about managing the city’s security on that day, given the large processions, rallies, and crowds that traditionally take over the streets during the festival. This led to the BCCI exploring alternatives, with Guwahati emerging as a backup option. However, after further discussions, the board has now reversed its position and is working tirelessly to keep the match in Kolkata, recognizing the significance of both the venue and the passionate local fan base.

A top BCCI source confirmed to India Today that discussions with Kolkata Police are ongoing to ensure proper security arrangements are made. The priority is to hold the match on the originally scheduled date and venue, but if that proves impossible, rescheduling or relocating the fixture will remain an option. The BCCI remains optimistic that a solution can be reached without changing the venue.

Beyond the security angle, former KKR pacer and BJP MLA Ashok Dinda weighed in on the financial implications, hinting that the potential economic loss for the franchise could be another factor behind the BCCI’s determination to keep the match at Eden Gardens. He explained that Ram Navami celebrations traditionally draw thousands of people to the streets for rallies and religious processions, creating heavy traffic congestion and potentially discouraging fans from making the trip to the stadium.

"It’s not just about security; it’s also a business decision," Dinda remarked. "On Ram Navami, the city gets flooded with people participating in the festivities. Who’s going to fight through that to buy tickets and watch the match? It would mean a loss for KKR — and let’s not forget, Shah Rukh Khan doesn’t come here to take losses. He comes for profit."

Dinda also pointed out that if local support and profitability weren’t key factors, KKR might field more Bengal-based players in their squad, reflecting on the business-first nature of franchise cricket.

For KKR, Eden Gardens isn’t just a home venue — it’s a fortress and a vital piece of their identity. Moving the match could dampen the electrifying atmosphere that only a packed Eden Gardens crowd can deliver. The prospect of losing that edge, along with potential financial hits from ticket sales and reduced fan engagement, seems to be weighing heavily on the BCCI’s final call.

The coming days will be crucial as the BCCI, Kolkata Police, and KKR management continue working to balance safety, logistics, and fan experience. If security arrangements can be ensured, Eden Gardens may yet roar to life on April 6, providing KKR the home advantage they crave — even amidst the city’s vibrant Ram Navami celebrations.
