Regarding Gwyneth Paltrow and Timothee Chalamet's sex scenes in Marty Supreme

Gwyneth Paltrow recently opened up about her discomfort with intimacy coordinators on film sets, reflecting on her experience while shooting her upcoming movie Marty Supreme alongside Timothée Chalamet. In a candid interview with Variety, the Oscar-winning actress admitted she was surprised by the now-common role of intimacy coordinators, designed to ensure actors feel safe and comfortable during intimate scenes.

"There’s now something called an intimacy coordinator, which I did not know existed," Paltrow said. "I was like: ‘Girl, I’m from the era where you get naked, you get in bed, the camera’s on.’”

The Iron Man star explained that, despite the intention behind the role, she found the setup more awkward than helpful. Both she and Chalamet, who plays her on-screen love interest, agreed they felt stifled by the structured guidance. “We said: ‘I think we’re good. You can step a little bit back.’ I don’t know how it is for kids who are starting out, but if someone is like, ‘OK, and then he’s going to put his hand here,’ I would feel, as an artist, very stifled by that.”

Paltrow also acknowledged the 24-year age gap between her and Chalamet, noting that while she initially had concerns about their on-screen chemistry, they ultimately worked well together. Chalamet, now 28, is one of Hollywood’s brightest young stars, while Paltrow, at 52, returns to a leading role for the first time since 2010.

"I mean, we have a lot of sex in this movie. There’s a lot — a lot," Paltrow added with a laugh, hinting at a performance that showcases a side of her audiences haven’t seen in years.

Marty Supreme, directed by Josh Safdie, follows Chalamet as a gifted but rebellious ping-pong prodigy navigating the cutthroat world of underground table tennis. Though the film is fictional, it’s widely rumored to draw inspiration from the life of legendary table tennis champion Marty Reisman, known for his flamboyant style and larger-than-life personality.

Paltrow plays a pivotal role in the film, portraying a complex, influential figure in Chalamet’s character’s life, with their intense on-screen relationship driving much of the emotional core of the story. The actress hinted that her character is "nothing like anyone I’ve ever played before," suggesting a layered, emotionally raw performance.

Meanwhile, Chalamet has taken on a dual role as both lead actor and producer — a significant career step for him. Known for his powerful performances in films like Call Me By Your Name and Dune, he’s now exploring more creative control behind the camera.

Marty Supreme is shaping up to be one of 2025’s most anticipated indie films, blending Safdie’s gritty, kinetic style with powerhouse performances from both Paltrow and Chalamet. For Paltrow, the project marks not only a return to acting but a bold redefinition of her career — proving she’s still willing to push boundaries and take risks, even after decades in the industry.

The film is expected to premiere at Cannes 2025, with a wider release planned for late summer. If early buzz is any indication, Marty Supreme could become a major awards contender — potentially even marking Paltrow’s long-awaited comeback to the Oscars stage.
