Sunil Chhetri will play in FIFA's March window after coming out of international retirement

Sunil Chhetri's decision to reverse his retirement and return to the Indian national team is a significant boost ahead of the crucial AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers. His comeback comes at the request of head coach Manolo Márquez, who wanted to strengthen the squad for the upcoming fixtures against Maldives and Bangladesh. Given Chhetri’s leadership and goal-scoring prowess, his inclusion will add experience and firepower to the team.

Chhetri had originally retired from international football in June 2024, following a 19-year career in which he became India’s all-time leading goal scorer with 94 international goals. However, he has remained in top form for Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League, netting 12 goals and providing two assists in the 2024-25 season. His fitness and continued goal-scoring ability likely played a role in the decision to bring him back.

India's qualification campaign for the AFC Asian Cup is crucial, and Chhetri’s presence could provide a psychological edge, particularly in must-win matches. His leadership will also be valuable in guiding younger players. With India set to play its home qualifiers in Shillong, the return of their most iconic footballer adds further excitement to the campaign.
