Three new Snapdragon G series CPUs for portable gaming devices are unveiled by Qualcomm

Qualcomm has introduced its latest Snapdragon G Series lineup, aiming to redefine handheld gaming with three new processors: Snapdragon G3 Gen 3, Snapdragon G2 Gen 2, and Snapdragon G1 Gen 2. These chipsets promise enhanced performance, improved graphics, and better connectivity, offering a more immersive gaming experience on Android-based handheld devices. Qualcomm’s push into this space reflects the growing demand for portable, high-performance gaming consoles that blend console-level power with on-the-go convenience.

The flagship Snapdragon G3 Gen 3 stands at the top of the lineup, delivering the most advanced capabilities. While it doesn’t include Qualcomm’s cutting-edge Oryon CPU or the Adreno 830 GPU — reserved for its top-tier smartphone processors — it still boasts impressive upgrades. Qualcomm highlights a 30% increase in CPU performance and a 28% boost in graphics compared to the previous G3 generation. One of its standout features is support for Lumen, Unreal Engine 5’s sophisticated lighting and reflections system, making it the first G Series chipset to incorporate this technology. This addition brings console-quality visual realism to handheld devices, enhancing everything from dynamic shadows to ray-traced reflections.

The G3 Gen 3 also supports QHD+ resolution at up to 144Hz refresh rates, ensuring buttery-smooth visuals, whether you’re playing fast-paced shooters or expansive open-world games. Connectivity gets a major upgrade, too, with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.3, powered by the Qualcomm FastConnect 7800 system, ensuring low-latency wireless gameplay — a crucial factor for competitive gaming.

Alongside the G3 Gen 3, Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 and G1 Gen 2 platforms. Both chipsets are designed to cater to different segments of the handheld gaming market. The G2 Gen 2 offers a balance of performance and power efficiency, making it ideal for mid-range gaming devices. The G1 Gen 2 focuses on retro and classic gaming experiences, providing enough power for 2D games and less demanding 3D titles while maximizing battery life.

A key feature shared between the G3 Gen 3 and G2 Gen 2 platforms is support for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Game Super Resolution and Adreno Frame Motion Engine 2.0. These technologies aim to boost visual fidelity and frame rates by intelligently upscaling resolutions and smoothing performance without taxing the hardware. This ensures that even demanding games run smoothly with better graphics, helping handheld devices punch above their weight class.

Qualcomm confirmed that multiple handheld gaming devices are already lined up to feature these new processors. The Snapdragon G3 Gen 3 will power Ayaneo’s Pocket S2 and Gaming Pad — devices known for blending sleek designs with high-performance hardware — as well as OneXPlayer’s OneXSugar, a performance-focused handheld built for hardcore gamers. Meanwhile, the Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 will debut in Retroid’s anticipated next-generation handheld, rumored to be the Retroid Pocket 6, continuing the company’s tradition of delivering versatile gaming consoles at an affordable price. The Snapdragon G1 Gen 2 is set to power the upcoming Retroid Pocket Classic, a nostalgic Game Boy-style device featuring a 3.92-inch AMOLED display designed for fans of retro gaming aesthetics.

Micah Knapp, senior director of product management at Qualcomm Technologies Inc., emphasized the company’s vision for the Snapdragon G Series, stating that these next-generation processors will "power the future of handheld gaming by supporting a wide range of play types and form factors for manufacturers and developers to innovate around.” This suggests Qualcomm is betting big on handheld gaming’s growth, positioning itself as a major player in a market that has traditionally been dominated by consoles like the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck.

The first wave of devices equipped with the new Snapdragon G Series platforms is expected to hit shelves later this quarter, setting the stage for a new era of handheld gaming. With powerful processors, enhanced visuals, and cutting-edge connectivity, Qualcomm seems poised to make a significant mark on the evolving landscape of portable gaming.
