Ukraine has agreed to a U.S.-proposed 30-day ceasefire with Russia, following discussions held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The truce, which can be extended by mutual consent, aims to halt a conflict that has resulted in significant casualties over the past three years. In response to Kyiv’s decision, the U.S. announced it would resume intelligence sharing and military aid to Ukraine, which had previously been paused due to disagreements over the war strategy and negotiations. Washington views this development as a critical step toward de-escalation and a possible long-term peace settlement.
President Donald Trump welcomed Ukraine’s decision and expressed optimism about the ceasefire, stating, "Now we have to go to Russia, and hopefully, President Putin will also agree to it." He emphasized the importance of ending the war to prevent further loss of life, highlighting the devastation faced by both soldiers and civilians. Trump's comments come as part of his broader strategy to push for peace in the region, something his administration has been advocating since his return to office.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who led the negotiations on behalf of Washington, described the agreement as a major diplomatic achievement. He stated, "Today was a good day for peace. Thanks to POTUS's leadership and under the gracious hospitality of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, we are one step closer to restoring durable peace for Ukraine. The ball is now in Russia's court." Rubio also warned that if Moscow rejects the ceasefire, it will expose who is truly obstructing peace.
However, concerns have been raised over Russia’s intentions following Ukraine's announcement. Just hours after Kyiv declared its readiness for a ceasefire, Russia launched fresh airstrikes on the Ukrainian cities of Kyiv and Kharkiv. These attacks have cast doubt on Moscow’s willingness to engage in peace talks. Western nations, including the UK, France, and Poland, have condemned the strikes and urged President Vladimir Putin to reciprocate Ukraine’s ceasefire commitment.
The international community remains hopeful that Russia will accept the ceasefire, paving the way for comprehensive negotiations to end the war. Meanwhile, Trump has confirmed that he will speak to Putin later this week and has invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the White House for further discussions.
