Delhi EV Policy 2.0: What Delhi's citizens might expect in the future

Delhi has registered 26,787 EV two-wheelers, 31,506 EV three-wheelers, 5,266 EV four-wheelers, and 323 electric buses since August 2020. The earlier goal was to make 25% of all new vehicle registrations electric by 2024, but only 13–14% has been achieved so far. The new target is 95% by 2027.

As per the draft:

  • Registration of petrol and CNG two-wheelers will stop from August 15, 2026.

  • Registration of petrol, diesel, and CNG three-wheelers (passenger and cargo) will stop from August 2025.

  • From August 15, 2024, CNG auto permits will no longer be renewed. Only electric auto permits will be issued.

  • Conversion of existing fossil-fuel autos to electric will be allowed through authorized channels.

  • Every third vehicle registered by a person must be an electric vehicle.

  • All garbage collection and utility vehicles of MCD, NDMC, and Delhi Jal Board must be electric by December 31, 2027.

  • Delhi currently has 1,919 charging stations and 232 swap stations. The draft proposes a significant expansion, but no fixed number has been announced.

The draft policy is awaiting cabinet approval and may undergo changes.
