Netflix will soon provide AI-powered movie and show searches

If you've ever found yourself endlessly scrolling through Netflix, unsure of what to watch, you're not alone. With its massive library spanning across genres, it can be difficult to pinpoint the perfect show or movie, especially when you're unsure about your mood. Basic suggestions sometimes miss the mark, and the traditional search tools that focus on titles, genres, or actor names aren't always helpful. But Netflix is now working on a solution to make your decision-making process a whole lot easier—by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its search functionality.

Netflix is currently testing a new AI-powered search tool, which allows users to search for movies and TV shows using natural language, mood descriptions, and highly specific queries. This feature is built on OpenAI’s models, aiming to provide a more intuitive and personalized search experience. At the moment, the AI search is being tested with a select group of iOS users in Australia and New Zealand, with plans to expand the feature to the U.S. and other regions in the near future.

Unlike the current search function, which relies on searching by title, genre, or actor name, the AI-powered search understands and processes more conversational and contextual queries. For example, a user might ask:

  • "Show me dark comedy series like The Office but with a twist."

  • "Find me a romantic movie set in Paris."

  • "Recommend a thriller that will keep me guessing until the end."

By analyzing these requests, Netflix's AI-powered search generates tailored recommendations from its content library, offering users a more dynamic way to explore options. This upgrade builds on Netflix’s existing recommendation engine, which already suggests content based on viewing history, but with greater flexibility and accuracy.

Currently, the AI search tool is exclusive to iOS users in Australia and New Zealand, and Netflix plans to expand its testing to other markets, including the U.S., in the coming weeks or months. While the company has not yet confirmed whether this feature will be available to Android or web users, it is focusing on refining the iOS version first before rolling it out more broadly. For users in India, it seems we'll have to wait a little longer to try it out, but the feature does hold promise for making the often frustrating task of deciding what to watch much more enjoyable.

Interestingly, while Netflix has not confirmed the possibility of voice searches for the AI tool, the natural language capabilities of the feature suggest that it could be a future addition. Given how seamless voice-enabled search has become in other platforms, it's quite likely that Netflix will integrate this functionality as the feature evolves.

This move aligns with Netflix's increasing investment in AI, which is already at play in its recommendation algorithms. However, the new AI search tool marks a more significant leap, moving beyond just recommendations to transform how users engage with the platform's content. By providing a more personalized and intuitive search experience, Netflix is making it easier for viewers to find the right content without spending too much time sifting through options.
