In a deeply emotional and symbolic moment that blended tradition with tribute, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla fulfilled a six-year-old promise to the family of Pulwama martyr Hemraj Meena by performing the ‘mayra’ (or bhat) ritual at the wedding of Meena’s daughter in Sangod, Rajasthan. The ritual, traditionally performed by a maternal uncle or brother, brought back celebrations and joy to a household that had remained steeped in sorrow since the Pulwama terror attack in 2019, which took Hemraj Meena’s life.
A Promise Made in Grief
After the attack, Birla had visited the bereaved widow Madhubala Meena and her daughter, offering words not just of condolence but of lifelong commitment. He promised Madhubala that he would support her like a real brother. Over the years, this bond was solidified as Madhubala began tying a rakhi on his wrist every Raksha Bandhan, and Birla continued to maintain a personal connection with the family.
A Sacred Duty, A Brother’s Role
On the wedding day, Om Birla arrived with the full traditional mayra—a ceremonial collection of gifts, sweets, clothes, and blessings from a brother to his sister’s family on such a significant occasion. But it wasn’t just about material gifts—it was a powerful gesture of emotional solidarity and respect.

Before joining the celebrations, Speaker Birla also paid floral tribute to the statue of Hemraj Meena, underscoring that his sacrifice and valor would never be forgotten. "His courage and love for the nation continue to inspire all of us. It's my sacred duty to stand by his family always," Birla stated, reaffirming his commitment.
