Perplexity AI assistant may soon be available for Samsung and Motorola smartphones

Samsung and Motorola may soon be integrating Perplexity AI as the default assistant on their smartphones, potentially replacing Google’s Gemini. According to a recent report from Bloomberg, Perplexity has already reached an agreement with Motorola to make its AI assistant the default on their devices. Samsung is also in talks with Perplexity to implement the assistant, marking a shift in the landscape of AI integration in smartphones.

In line with this development, Motorola is set to host an event on April 24 in New York, where it is expected to officially announce its partnership with Perplexity. At the event, Motorola is likely to unveil its latest Razr foldable phones, which may come preloaded with Perplexity AI as the default assistant. New models, such as the Moto Razr 60 and Moto Razr 60 Ultra, are expected to be revealed, showcasing this new AI integration.

For Samsung, the specifics of the deal are still being worked out. However, it’s suggested that the company may either pre-install Perplexity’s app on its smartphones or even make it the default digital assistant. There is also speculation that Samsung could promote Perplexity within the Galaxy Store, aiming to increase its visibility across its ecosystem.

Samsung has shown interest in Perplexity since last year, when its investment arm, NEXT, backed the AI startup in 2024. The Bloomberg report further hints that Samsung may invest more heavily in Perplexity in the future, cementing the partnership further.

This move raises interesting questions about the future of Samsung's collaboration with Google, as its Galaxy AI features are currently powered by Google's AI technologies. It seems that Perplexity’s AI assistant could be a direct competitor to Google’s assistant within Samsung’s devices.

Given that Motorola is coinciding its partnership announcement with a new flagship launch, Samsung might follow suit and reveal a similar announcement alongside the upcoming launch of its Galaxy S25 Edge, which is speculated to launch in May.

For context, Perplexity AI is a San Francisco-based AI search engine founded in August 2022 by Aravind Srinivas, Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho, and Andy Konwinski. The platform offers conversational answers with citations, using models such as GPT-4, Claude, and Llama. Perplexity is backed by high-profile investors like Jeff Bezos and Nvidia, and it positions itself as a competitor to Grok, ChatGPT, and Google's Gemini.

In recent months, Perplexity AI has launched several innovative features, including an Android-based Perplexity Assistant, which handles tasks like booking dinners and setting reminders. The company also introduced a Deep Research tool for rapid, in-depth analysis across various fields. Additionally, Perplexity has developed the Comet browser, which is tailored for AI-driven web browsing.

As this battle for AI supremacy continues to unfold, the upcoming months could see Perplexity AI playing a significant role in the smartphone industry.
