In a deeply distressing and tragic incident, Mohit Kumar, a 30-year-old field engineer from Auraiya district in Uttar Pradesh, ended his life by suicide in a hotel room in Noida, allegedly due to sustained mental harassment and emotional abuse at the hands of his wife, Priya Yadav, and her family. Before taking the extreme step, Mohit recorded a heart-wrenching video message explaining the circumstances that led to his decision—exposing what he described as constant coercion, emotional manipulation, and threats of legal action.
In his video, Mohit made several shocking allegations. He claimed that his wife and her family were pressuring him relentlessly to transfer his property and assets into their names. He also accused them of threatening to file false dowry and domestic violence cases against him and his parents if he failed to comply. The emotional tone of the video was one of desperation and hopelessness, as Mohit repeatedly said he could no longer bear the stress and humiliation. He lamented the lack of legal protection for men facing domestic abuse, stating:
“By the time you get this video, I will be gone from this world. If there was a law for men, maybe I wouldn’t have taken this step. I couldn’t bear the mental torture by my wife and her family. Mom, Dad, please forgive me.”
Mohit had been in a relationship with Priya Yadav for around seven years before their families arranged their marriage. Initially, things seemed fine. However, his family said the situation changed dramatically after Priya secured a job as a primary school teacher in Samastipur, Bihar. They alleged that she began to mentally harass Mohit and isolate him from his own family, reportedly under the influence of her mother and brother. The allegations suggest a calculated attempt to gain control over Mohit’s assets and finances through threats and manipulation.
In the video, Mohit claimed that Priya’s family forced an abortion of their child and that his mother-in-law retained all the jewellery and sarees gifted at the time of marriage. He said:
“My wife Priya Yadav’s mother forced the abortion of our child and kept all the jewellery and sarees with her. My wife is threatening me that if I don’t transfer the house and property in her name, she will file a false dowry case against me and my family.”
The video ended with a message that revealed the full extent of his emotional devastation:
“If I don’t get justice even after my death, then let my ashes be immersed in a drain. Mom and Dad, please forgive me. I couldn't live up to your expectations.”
Mohit's body was discovered in Room 105 of the Jolly Hotel, located near Railway Station Road in Noida. The hotel staff alerted police when he didn’t respond or come out of the room. Superintendent of Police Abhay Nath Tripathi confirmed:
“We received information from Jolly Hotel. Mohit had checked into Room No. 105 and hadn’t come out. When we opened the door, he was found hanging. We conducted a forensic examination and prepared a report. Prima facie, it appears to be a suicide. His address was traced, and the family has been informed.”
Following the autopsy, the body was handed over to Mohit’s family, who brought it back to Auraiya for cremation. His brother, Taran Pratap, has demanded justice and strict legal action against Priya and her family, holding them directly responsible for Mohit’s death. He said:
“Mohit was working at a cement company in Noida. He met Priya there and fell in love. We supported their relationship, and they were married. But after just three months, she started harassing him. She separated him from us and threatened him with legal action if he didn’t transfer property. Her brother and mother also made threats. The pressure became unbearable, and my brother took this tragic step.”
Wider Implications and Public Reaction:
This incident has sparked a debate on the need for gender-neutral laws in cases of domestic abuse and false legal accusations. Many have taken to social media demanding that men's mental health be taken seriously and that existing laws, such as those related to dowry harassment and domestic violence, not be misused.
There is growing sentiment that men, too, can be victims of emotional abuse, coercion, and exploitation in marriages, and that such issues often go unnoticed or are dismissed due to societal expectations placed on men to “endure” hardship silently.
Several men's rights organizations have spoken up since the video surfaced, calling for legal reforms, helplines for distressed men, and counselling centers that offer support without judgment. Some have also demanded that authorities investigate the allegations made in Mohit's video and take appropriate legal action against those involved.
As of now, no arrests have been made, but the police are expected to initiate a detailed inquiry into the matter based on the video testimony and the statements from Mohit’s family.
