Review of Agnyathavasi: A slow-moving thriller with difficult decisions

‘Agnyathavasi’ emerges as a dark horse in the crowded April 11, 2025 release slate, standing its ground not with aggressive promotion, but with smart storytelling and emotional depth. Directed by Janardhan Chikkanna, who bounces back after the misfire of Powder, the film is a reminder that a well-crafted thriller can still surprise — if it dares to zig when the audience expects a zag.

Right from the trailer, there’s a clear intention to play with audience expectations, and the film stays committed to that idea. Credit goes to writer Krishna Raj, who constructs a layered narrative that lulls viewers into believing they’ve figured things out, only to pull the rug out from under them when it counts. The twists aren’t loud or gimmicky — they’re embedded in solid character work and a non-linear structure that deepens the mystery instead of simply complicating it.

While the first half drags slightly due to its deliberate pace, it does the necessary groundwork for a rewarding and emotionally resonant second half. The film doesn’t just function as a whodunnit; it reflects on themes of loss, redemption, and guilt, which are subtly embedded within its structure.

The cast, led by a surprisingly intense Rangayana Raghu, is stellar. Known primarily for comedy, Raghu taps into a grim, almost haunting side of his acting arsenal. His performance alone adds weight to the unfolding drama. Paavana Gowda, Ravishankar Gowda, Siddu Moolimani, and others hold their own, with not a single weak link in the ensemble. Their grounded performances give the story its pulse.

Final Verdict:

Agnyathavasi’ doesn’t rely on jump scares or loud plot gimmicks. Instead, it trusts the audience’s intelligence, delivering a thoughtful, twisty thriller that leaves an emotional impact. Though it starts slow, it ends strong — and in today’s formulaic thriller landscape, that’s a win.

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
Ideal for: Viewers who appreciate slow-burn mysteries, emotional payoffs, and non-linear narratives that actually make sense.
