Trailer for Agnyathavasi: A Kannada murder mystery centered on the world of black magic

The trailer of the much-awaited Kannada film Agnyathavasi was released on April 3, 2025, offering audiences a tantalizing glimpse into what promises to be one of the most atmospheric and compelling mystery thrillers of the year. Directed by Janardhan Chikkanna, whose previous directorial Gultoo earned praise for its intelligent screenplay and modern narrative style, Agnyathavasi marks a significant shift in tone as it dives into the world of crime, secrets, and suspense set in a rural Karnataka village in the year 1997.

The film is produced by Hemanth M Rao, the visionary filmmaker behind Sapta Saagaradaache Ello, under his home banner. Known for backing grounded and emotionally resonant stories, Hemanth brings the same sensibility to Agnyathavasi, ensuring a rich blend of artistic storytelling and engaging drama.

The cast includes veterans and rising stars of Kannada cinema: Rangayana Raghu, a powerhouse performer known for his intense character roles; Siddu Moolimani, whose recent performances have garnered both critical and fan acclaim; Pavana Gowda, known for her layered portrayals of strong yet vulnerable women; and Ravishankar Gowda, who adds gravitas and experience to the lineup. The film features an ensemble that’s expected to deliver deeply rooted performances reflective of the socio-cultural landscape of the late 90s.

The trailer, which runs for just under two minutes, is a masterclass in cinematic tension. It starts off by introducing the village, its people, and their seemingly ordinary lives — only to slowly twist the narrative by replaying key scenes in a more ominous context. This clever use of repetition, mirrored visuals, and altered tone hints at a deeper conspiracy or cover-up surrounding a central murder case, and makes the viewer question everything they’ve seen. The shifting perspective adds layers to the story, making the audience active participants in the unraveling mystery.

Charan Raj’s music plays a crucial role in creating the eerie, suspenseful mood. The background score is both haunting and immersive, heightening the emotional beats and enhancing the thriller elements without overpowering the visuals. Complementing the music is the cinematography by Advaitha Gurumurthy, who captures the village and its characters with a lens that is both nostalgic and unsettling. The use of light and shadow, muted color palettes, and slow, deliberate camera movements all evoke a sense of time and place that pulls the viewer into the world of 1997 rural Karnataka.

Though the film was announced back in early 2023, it underwent multiple delays due to unforeseen production hurdles and a prolonged post-production process that involved meticulous editing and sound design. The filmmakers were intent on delivering a polished final product, and with the trailer now out, it’s clear their patience and precision have paid off. The film is finally set for a theatrical release in April 2025, and anticipation is steadily building.

The Kannada film industry, known for its recent surge in critically acclaimed content, has rallied around Agnyathavasi. Prominent actors Shiva Rajkumar and Rakshit Shetty publicly praised the trailer by sharing it across their social media platforms. Shiva Rajkumar wrote, “I really liked it. All the best to Hemanth Rao and Janardhan Chikkanna.” Rakshit Shetty, too, was effusive in his praise, calling it “intense, intriguing, and beautifully put together.”

Beyond just a whodunit, Agnyathavasi seems poised to explore themes of guilt, social hierarchy, the impact of secrets on small communities, and how the passage of time can distort truth. The title itself — which translates roughly to "The Anonymous One" or "The Hidden One" — suggests a deeper philosophical or psychological undercurrent that could resonate long after the mystery is solved.

With strong direction, a visionary producer, a committed cast, and a technically sound team, Agnyathavasi is shaping up to be a standout entry in the Kannada cinematic landscape of 2025. Whether it’s the complex characters, the period setting, or the immersive storytelling, this film has all the makings of a gripping and memorable mystery thriller.
